I.B. 3A74499BPage 18Effective 11/97The circuit breaker mechanism provides a fixed amountof motion to the operating rods. The first portion of themotion is used to close the contacts (i.e. stroke) and theremainder is used to further compress the preloadedwipe spring. This additional compression is called wipe.Wipe and Stroke are thus related to each other. As thestroke increases due to the erosion of contacts, the wipedecreases. A great deal of effort has been spent in thedesign of all Westinghouse vacuum breakers, in order toeliminate the need for field adjustments of wipe orstroke.THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR IN SERVICEADJUSTMENTS OF CONTACT WIPE AND STROKE.ALL SUCH ADJUSTMENTS ARE FACTORY SETAND SHOULD NOT BE ATTEMPTED IN THE FIELD.5-1.5 POLE UNIT SUPPORT MOLDINGDO NOT PLACE THE BREAKER IN ITS COMPART-MENT WITHOUT ALL PARTS OF THE POLE UNITSUPPORT MOLDING BEING IN PLACE. THEABSENCE OF A COVER ON ALL 95 KV BIL RATEDBREAKERS FROM 630 THROUGH AND INCLUDING1250 AMPERES CAN CAUSE A CATASTROPHICFAILURE RESULTING IN DEATH, SEVERE PERSON-AL INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.The W-VAC design utilizes continuous glass polyestermoldings to support individual pole units. All 95 KV BIL630 through 1250 ampere rated breakers require anadditional cover to be added to the support molding, resulting in the support molding being enclosed on allfour vertical sides (Figure 5-4).5-2 STORED ENERGY MECHANISMKEEP HANDS AND FINGERS AWAY FROM THEBREAKER'S INTERNAL PARTS WHILE THE BREAK-ER CONTACTS ARE CLOSED OR THE CLOSINGSPRINGS ARE CHARGED. THE BREAKER CON-TACTS MAY OPEN OR THE CLOSING SPRINGS DIS-CHARGE CAUSING A CRUSHING INJURY. DIS-CHARGE THE SPRINGS AND OPEN THE BREAKERBEFORE PERFORMING ANY BREAKER MAINTE-NANCE, INSPECTION OR REPAIR.The spring stored energy operating mechanism isarranged vertically in front of all W-VAC breakers. Itincludes all the elements for storing the energy, closingand tripping of the breaker, as well as manual and elec-trical controls. The manual controls are all front accessi-ble. Motion to close and open the interrupter contacts isprovided through operating rods connecting the mecha-nism pole shaft to the bell cranks of the inter-rupter assemblies.5-2.1 OPERATION OF STORED ENERGYMECHANISMThe mechanism stores the closing energy by chargingthe closing springs. The mechanism may rest in any oneof the four positions shown infigure 5.5 and as follows:a. Breaker open, closing springs dischargedb. Breaker open, closing springs chargedc. Breaker closed, closing springs dischargedd. Breaker closed, closing springs charged! CAUTION! WARNING! WARNINGFigure 5-4 Type W-VAC 95 kV BIL breaker shown withleft hand cover removed for clarity purposes. All threecovers must be in place before application.
