9NOVA® 15i, NOVA 27i, and NOVA 38i; Three-phasemicroprocessor-controlled; installation and operationinstructions (S280-43-1)Instructional Literature IL0104001EEffective January 2017Remove recloser from service1. Block ground tripping via the control panel.2. Close all three bypass switches.3. Pull down the yellow operating handle with a hotstick. Theyellow operating handle is located under the recloser sleethood.4. The control will sense that the recloser is open and provideOPEN/LOCKOUT indication on the front panel.5. Open the source and load disconnect switches.6. Remove high-voltage connections from recloser.7. Remove control cables, power cables, and ground leads fromrecloser.Note: Disconnecting the control cable on an energizedrecloser will not damage the integrated CTs.8. Follow standard utility procedures regarding removal ofrecloser from service.Grounding the NOVA i recloser3-wire ungrounded and impedance grounded systemsThe use of a grounding mat may be required depending upon thelocal safety regulations defining the permissible step and touchpotential levels. Consult local regulations for proper groundingprocedures. In pole-mounted applications, a ground connection must be made between therecloser, transformer, recloser control, and SCADA equipment for properprotection of the equipment. It is recommended to use a minimum of 50 sq mmcopper wire for the pole ground connection to the recloser.IMPORTANTAll external inputs to the control must be routed within 203 mm of theircorresponding ground. During a surge, a potential of approximately 1.5 kV per footcan develop in the conductors. Differences between conductor and ground pathlengths can add additional stress to the control components in the event of apower surge.IMPORTANTAny external voltage sensor installed with the NOVA i recloser must have itsground referenced to the recloser ground.IMPORTANTHazardous Voltage. If the recloser is energized while the control cable isdisconnected, the CT secondaries can generate high voltages. Contactwith high voltage can cause severe personal injury or death.WARNING
