1. IntroductionThe Symphoni (SY) LX Base is a high specificationVAD (Visual Alarm Devices) suitable for wallmounting in accordance with EN54-23 and is part ofthe LX range. The base is compatible with a numberof sounders from the Symphoni range, and is used inplace of the standard or weatherproof bases. Theyare suitable for visual alarm signalling within openareas or corridors and passages.The device has been specifically designed for usewithin fire alarm systems, to meet the requirementsof the CPR (Construction Products Regulation). Itproduces a flash of light at a predetermined intervalwhen connected to a suitable power supply. Whenconnected to a common power supply, devices willself-synchronise their flashing for a defined period oftime after starting (see installation guide for moredetail)..2. General functional descriptionThe device is normally in an off state, with no voltageapplied to the power terminals. In this state, the unithas no power and so does not operate.When the device is required to operate, a voltagebetween 9 - 60VDC is applied to the appropriatepower terminals. This provides power to the circuitvia a polarity protection / system monitoring diode, &an RC network which provides supply smoothing andnoise immunity protection. Further protection is alsoprovided against voltage spikes on the supply. At theheart of the device is a microprocessor whichderives its power from a switched mode voltageregulator circuit.The light flash is achieved by the use of an LED(Light Emitting Diode). A drive circuit generates thenecessary voltage & current required to drive theLED. Control of the flash is achieved via themicrocontroller, which runs the programmedfirmware for its operation.3.
