6Type VFI, Fluid-insulated SwitchgearINSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS MN285006EN March 2018WARNINGDo not operate this equipment if energized parts are notimmersed in dielectric fluid Operation when parts arenot properly immersed in dielectric fluid may result ininternal flashovers that will damage the equipment andcan cause death or severe personal injury G104 4ApplicationThis switchgear must only be applied within its specifiedratings. At no time should the continuous total load exceedthe ratings shown on the nameplate. This switchgear must always be filled to the correct levelwith mineral oil, Envirotemp™ E200 or Envirotemp™ FR3™fluid.Vacuum fault interruptersThe vacuum fault interrupter push/pull operating handles(shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4) are located on theswitchgear front plates. A hotstick must be used to operatethe handles of the vacuum fault interrupters.WARNINGHazardous Voltage Always use a shotgun stick whenworking with this equipment Failure to do so couldresult in contact with high voltage, which will causedeath or severe personal injury G108 0Opening interrupterThe vacuum fault interrupter is opened by pulling theoperating handle down to the open position. The handlemay be padlocked in the open position to prevent accidentalclosure.Resetting the vacuum fault interrupterAfter the vacuum fault interrupter mechanism has tripped,as the result of a fault condition, the mechanism must bereset before it can be closed. To reset the mechanism, firmly pull the operating handle down toward the grounduntil the latch resets. After the latch has been successfullyreset, the vacuum fault interrupter mechanism can beclosed normally.Closing the interrupterThe vacuum fault interrupter is closed by briskly pushing thehandle up, into the closed position.otee:N In many configurations, a Type RVAC switch isintegrated within the VFI switchgear. Refer to theOperation section of MN285005EN Type RVAC Fluid-Insulated Vacuum Switchgear; Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Instructions for operationinformation for the RVAC switch.Loadbreak switchIn most configurations, a Type RVAC loadbreak switch isintegrated within the VFI switchgear. The switch’s push-to-close/ pull-to-open handle is operated with a clampstick. The switch can be padlocked in either position, and a keyinterlock is available for added security.Maintenance informationWARNINGThis equipment relies on dielectric fluid to provideelectrical insulation between components The dielectricstrength and moisture content of the fluid must bechecked on a regular basis, as part of the routinemaintenance inspection, to ensure that it is at orabove minimum dielectric requirements and below themaximum moisture content Use of this equipmentwith dielectric fluid that does not meet requirementscan result in internal flashovers that will damage theequipment and can result in death or serious injury G107 3CAUTIONThis equipment requires routine inspection andmaintenance to ensure proper operation If it is notmaintained it can fail to operate properly Improperoperation can cause equipment damage and possiblepersonal injury G105 1The Type VFI switchgear is a deadfront design. All live partsare contained within the sealed tank enclosure. A routinemaintenance inspection program is required to ensureproper operation. It is necessary to establish and maintain a regular schedulefor sampling and testing the insulating fluid to ensure properdielectric strength, moisture content and fluid levels in theswitchgear.Maintenance inspection procedureThe Type VFI switchgear must be de-energized, grounded, and removed from service before conducting anymaintenance, fluid processing or fluid-filling procedures.WARNINGHazardous voltage This equipment must bede-energized and grounded prior to conducting anymaintenance, dielectric fluid processing or dielectricfluid filling procedures Failure to comply can result indeath or severe personal injury T239 21. De-energize and ground switchgear2. Reduce internal tank pressure to 0 PSIG Theswitchgear is equipped with a pressure relief valvethat opens at 5 PSIG and closes at 3 PSIG. To relieveinternal tank pressure, pull the ring on the pressurerelief valve.
