How to operate the tuner36FM reception characteristicsIn general, FM has much better tonal quality than AM.However, FM and FM stereo reception encounter severalcharacteristic problems not encountered with AM. FM ismore difficult to receive than AM in a moving vehicle. Thefollowing are explanatory notes on what to expect from FMreception and on how to get satisfactory performance.1 . FM RECEPTION DIFFERS FROM AMA characteristic of transmitted signals is that lowerfrequencies travel further. FM frequencies are muchhigher than AM’s (similar to a ray of light): they won’tbend but they will reflect. Often, they will be interruptedby tall buildings, mountains, etc., taking direct andindirect paths to your vehicle’s antenna. The distance atwhich FM stations can be received satisfactorily isusually not nearly as far as that which AM stations canbe received.2 . FADING OUTIn weak signal or “fringe” reception areas, FM stationsmay fade out completely, or fade in and out. Whendriving in weak signal areas, such as near hills, throughvalleys or tunnels, among tall buildings, etc., you mayencounter unusual noise interference. THIS IS NOT ATUNER PROBLEM. In this case, you can only wait untilyou are in a better reception area, tune to a strongerstation, or reduce the treble level.
