Telephone BasicsAdjusting the VolumeYou may control the listening level with the VOLUME switch, whichhas three levels.Redialing a NumberIf you want to call the last number you dialed again (up to 32 digits),use the redial feature.1. Pick up the handset.2. Press the redial button, and wait (approx. 5 seconds) for the unit toautomatically redial the last number you called.Using One Touch RedialIf the last call you dialed was busy, you can redial it immediately byjust pressing the redial button and without hanging up the handset.MemoryBefore you store a telephone number in memory, make sure thedialing mode is correctly set for the type of service you have. Thedefault dialing mode is tone (touch-tone), so if you have pulse (rotary)service, you must first change the dialing mode. See “Setting theDialing Mode.” The following buttons can be stored into any memorylocation: 0-9.Storing Frequently Called Numbers1. Pick up the handset.2. Press the store button.3. Push the desired memory location button.4. Press the store button.5. Use the handset number keys to enter the telephone number (upto 16-digits) and press the store button.6. Hang up the handset.NOTE: If you make a mistake, use the delete button todelete wrong digits.Changing a Stored NumberRepeat the storage sequence above. The new number replaces theold number at the memory location.Erasing a Stored Number1. Pick up the handset.2. Press the store button.3. Press the memory location (0-9) to be erased.4. Press delete for three seconds.5. Hang up the handset.Dialing Frequently Called Numbers1. Pick up the handset and press the mem button,2. Press 0-9 for the memory location. The number dials automatically.OR1. Pick up the handset and press the dial button.2. Press the review button for the desired memory location.3. Press the dial button to dial the number.Reviewing Numbers Stored in Memory1. Press the store button.2. Press 0-9 for the memory location. The number shows on thedisplay.Copy Caller ID Memory to User Memory1. Pickup the handset.2. Press either review (5 or 6) button to display the number youwant to copy.3. Press the store button.4. Press 0-9 for the memory location. The display flashes if thememory location is occupied. Press either review (5 or 6) buttonto select an empty location. The number is automatically stored tothe empty location.5. Press the hook switch to exit.Copy Redial Memory to User Memory1. Pickup the handset.2. Press store.3. Press 0-9 for the memory location. The display flashes if thememory location is occupied. Press either review (5 or 6) buttonto select a different location.4. Press the store button again to confirm.5. Press the redial button, and then press the store button again.6. Press the flash button or the hook switch to exit.Storing a Pause in MemoryThe redial button has dual functionality. It becomes a pause buttonif the store button is pressed first. It is valid only when storing anumber into memory. Use the redial button to insert a pause whena delay is needed in an automatic dialing sequence. For example,when you must dial a 9 to get an outside line, or when you entercodes to access your long distance company. A pause shows in thedisplay as a “P.”You may need to adjust the length of the pause. It can be adjustedfrom 1 to 9 seconds. The default setting is 4 seconds.1. Pickup the handset.2. Press the store button.3. Press the redial button.4. Press 1-9 (1 = 1 second, 2 = 2 seconds, etc.)5. Press store again.6. Press the flash button or the hook switch to exit.Chain DialingThis process allows you to dial a succession of stored numbers fromseparate memory locations. This is useful when you must dial severalsequences of numbers, such as with frequent calls via a telephonecompany long distance provider.Installing the PhoneInstalling the BatteriesIMPORTANT: You will have approximately 90 seconds toreplace the batteries before the memories stored in thehandset are lost. Please read the instructions beforereplacing the batteries and have the batteries ready tobe inserted beforehand. As a precaution, you may wantto write down any stored information you do not wanterased.Your Caller ID phone uses 4 AAA-size alkaline batteries for receivingand storing Caller ID records and for the numbers you use formemory dialing.1. If the telephone cord is already connected, disconnect it from thewall jack. Place the handset off to the side.2. Use a ball point pen to open the battery compartment door.3. Insert 4 AAA-size alkaline batteries as shown on the diagram insidethe battery compartments.4. Replace and secure the battery compartment doors.IMPORTANT: If you’re not going to use the telephone formore than 30 days, remove the batteries because theycan leak and damage the unit.Installing the PhoneYour phone should be placed on a level surface, such as a desk ortable top, or you can mount it on a wall.1. Plug the straight telephone line cord into a modular phone jack.2. Set the RINGER switch on the base to the desired volume level.= Sound will be loudest.= Sound will be lower.= Telephone will not ring.3. Place the handset in the cradle on the base.NOTE: The unit is properly installed if you pick up thehandset and hear the dial tone. If you don’t hear adial tone, recheck all installation steps, or refer to theTroubleshooting Tips section of this user’s guide formore information.Wallmount InstallationYour telephone may also be mounted on awall plate (not included).1. Plug the telephone line cord into amodular wall phone jack.2. Feed the straight telephone line cordthrough the grooves on the bottom of thebase.3. Slip the mounting holes on the bottomof the base over the wall plate posts andfirmly slide the unit down into place (wallplate not included).Wrapping the Telephone Line CordIn desktop or wall mount mode, you may want to wrap the excesstelephone line cord around the mounting bracket on the bottom ofthe base.Telephone Set UpSetting Up the Caller ID MenuDo not plug the telephone into the modular phone jack while settingup the Caller ID menu because an incoming call may invalidate theinformation not yet saved. The handset must be on the cradle on thebase to enter the Setup Menu.1. Press the options button. SET 5 OR 6 appears in the display.2. At this point you can press either REVIEW up or down button toscroll among the seven menu screens, which are:• SET 5 OR 6• LOCAL AREA CODE (default - - -)• REGIONAL AC’S-1• CID LANGUAGE (default English)• SELECT CONTRAST (default 3)• T/P DIAL MODE (default TONE)• EXIT SETUP3. You have 10 seconds following any key press before the phoneautomatically return to the NO CALLS summary screen, or you canpress dial to exit during set up.Telephone Jack RequirementsTo use this phone, you need an RJ11C typemodular telephone jack, which might look likethe one pictured here, installed in your home. Ifyou don’t have a modular jack, call your localphone company to find out how to get oneinstalled.Important Installation Information• Avoid sources of noise and heat, such as motors, fluorescentlighting, microwave ovens, heating appliances and direct sunlight.• Avoid areas of excessive dust, moisture and low temperature.• Avoid other cordless telephones or personal computers.• Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.• Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack isspecifically designed for wet locations.• Never touch non-insulated telephone wires or terminals, unless thetelephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.• Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.Handset LayoutSetting Your Local Area CodeThe telephone uses the programmed area code to determine thenumber format to display when a valid Caller ID signal is received. Itis also used for the Dialback feature.1. Press the options button. SET 5 OR 6 appears in the display.2. Press the review up button until - - - LOCAL AREA CODE appears inthe display.3. To enter or change the area code, press the options button. Thedisplay shows the area code stored in memory. The left-most digitor a minus sign (-) flashes, indicating the unit is ready to accept thearea code entry.4. Press review down and select a number from 9-0 for the first digit.5. When the desired digit is flashing, press review up to advance tothe next digit.6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all the digits for your area code arecorrect.If you make a mistake, you can simply repeat the previous stepsuntil your area code is set.7. Press options to store the area code and return to the LOCAL AREACODE display.Setting Regional Area Codes for 10-DigitDialingLike the Local Area Code, the telephone uses the programmed areacodes to determine the number format to display when a validCaller ID signal is received. Calls that match any of the programmedregional area codes are displayed as 10 digits. This is helpful in areasthat have multiple or overlapping area codes and require 10-digitdialing.1. Press the options button. SET 5 OR 6 appears in the display.2. Press the review up button until - - - - - - - - - REGIONAL AC’S-1shows in the display.3. To enter or change the area code, press the options button. Thedisplay shows the area code stored in memory. The left-most digit,or minus sign (-), flashes, indicating the unit is ready to accept thearea code entry.4. Press the review down button and select a number from 9-0 forthe first digit of the area code.5. When the desired digit is flashing, press the review up button toadvance to the next digit.6. Press the options button again to enter the next three-digitregional area code and repeat steps 4 and 5 until all theREGIONAL AC’S-1 and REGIONAL AC’S-2 are entered.7. Press the options button to store the setting and return to theREGIONAL AC’S-1 display.8. Press dial to exit.Setting the CID Display LanguageThis setting lets you display Caller ID messages in English, French orSpanish.1. Press the options button. SET 5 OR 6 appears in the display.2. Press the review up button until CID LANGUAGE appears in thedisplay.3. Press the options button to show the current language setting. Thedefault is English.4. Press review up or down to change the language.5. Press options to store the language and return to the CIDLANGUAGE display.Setting the ContrastThis adjustment allows you to adjust the contrast and viewing angleof the display.1. Press the options button until SET 5 OR 6 appears.2. Press the review up button until SELECT CONTRAST appears in thedisplay.3. Press the options button to show the current contrast setting.There are five levels of contrast, with the default set to 3.4. To decrease the contrast, press review down. To increase thecontrast, press review up.5. Press the options button to store the contrast setting and return tothe SELECT CONTRAST display.Setting the Dialing ModeThis adjustment allows you to select tone (touch-tone) or pulse (rotary)dialing.1. Press the options button until SET 5 OR 6 appears.2. Press the review up button until T/P DIAL MODE appears in thedisplay.3. Press the options button to show the current dial mode. Thedefault is set to TONE.4. To change the dialing mode, press review up or down. The displaywill alternate between the two dialing modes.5. Press the options button to store the dialing mode and return tothe T/P DIAL MODE display.Exiting SetupTo immediately exit the setup mode after your changes have beenmade, select the EXIT SETUP menu and press the options button.NOTE: The phone exits Setup after 10 seconds if nobuttons are pressed.REMINDER: The time and date are programmedautomatically when the first Caller ID record issuccessfully received after the unit is setup.Equipment Approval InformationYour telephone equipment is approved for connection to the PublicSwitched Telephone Network and is in compliance with parts 15 and68, FCC Rules and Regulations and the Technical Requirements forTelephone Terminal Equipment published by ACTA.1 Notification to the Local Telephone CompanyOn the bottom of this equipment is a label indicating, among otherinformation, the US number and Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) forthe equipment. You must, upon request, provide this information toyour telephone company.The REN is useful in determining the number of devices you mayconnect to your telephone line and still have all of these devices ringwhen your telephone number is called. In most (but not all) areas,the sum of the RENs of all devices connected to one line should notexceed 5. To be certain of the number of devices you may connectto your line as determined by the REN, you should contact your localtelephone company.A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiringand telephone network must comply with the applicable FCC Part 68rules and requirements adopted by the ACTA. A compliant telephonecord and modular plug is provided with this product. It is designed tobe connected to a compatible modular jack that is also compliant.See installation instructions for details.Notes• This equipment may not be used on coin service provided by thetelephone company.• Party lines are subject to state tariffs, and therefore, you may not beable to use your own telephone equipment if you are on a party line.Check with your local telephone company.• Notice must be given to the telephone company upon permanentdisconnection of your telephone from your line.• If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected tothe telephone line, ensure the installation of this product does notdisable your alarm equipment. If you have questions about whatwill disable alarm equipment, consult your telephone company or aqualified installer.US Number is located on the cabinet bottom.REN Number is located on the cabinet bottom.2 Rights of the Telephone CompanyShould your equipment cause trouble on your line which mayharm the telephone network, the telephone company shall, wherepracticable, notify you that temporary discontinuance of servicemay be required. Where prior notice is not practicable and thecircumstances warrant such action, the telephone company maytemporarily discontinue service immediately. In case of suchtemporary discontinuance, the telephone company must: (1) promptlynotify you of such temporary discontinuance; (2) afford you theopportunity to correct the situation; and (3) inform you of your right tobring a complaint to the Commission pursuant to procedures set forthin Subpart E of Part 68, FCC Rules and Regulations.The telephone company may make changes in its communicationsfacilities, equipment, operations or procedures where such actionis required in the operation of its business and not inconsistent withFCC Rules and Regulations. Theseservices generally require an extra monthly fee. If you subscribeto any of these services, please refer to the phone company’sinstructions on how to use flash.To answer an incoming call while having a conversation:• After you hear the Call Waiting tone, press and release the flashbutton. The first call is placed on hold while the second call can beanswered.To return to your first call and put the second call on hold:• Press and release flash again. The first call can continue while thesecond call is put on hold.Temporary Tone DialingThis feature is useful only if you have pulse dialing service.Temporary Tone Dialing enables pulse (rotary) service phone users toaccess touch-tone services offered by banks, credit card companies,etc. For example, when you call your bank you may need to enteryour bank account number. Temporarily switching to Touch Tonemode allows you to send your number.1. Dial the telephone number and wait for the line to connect.2. When your call is answered, press the *tone button on the handsetnumber pad to temporarily change from PULSE dialing to TONEdialing.3. Follow the automated instructions to get the information youneed.4. Hang up the handset and the phone automatically returns toPULSE (rotary) dialing mode.Caller ID (CID)IMPORTANT: In order to use this unit’s Caller IDfeatures, you must subscribe to either the standardName/Number Caller ID Service or Call Waiting CallerID Service. To know who is calling while you are on thephone, you must subscribe to Call Waiting Caller IDService.This unit receives and displays information transmitted by your localphone company. This information can include the phone number,date, and time; or the name, phone number, date, and time.Call Waiting Caller IDProvided you subscribe to Call Waiting Caller ID service from yourphone company; if you receive an incoming call and you are alreadyon the phone, a beep indicates the presence of a Call Waiting callon the line. Only the handset that is in use at the time of the call willdisplay and store the Call Waiting Caller ID information.• When you hear the call waiting beep in the handset receiver, pressthe flash button to put the current call on hold and answer theincoming call. Press flash again to return to the original call.Receiving CID RecordsWhen you receive a call, the Caller ID information is transmittedbetween the first and second ring. The Caller ID information appearson the display while the phone rings, giving you a chance to monitorthe information and decide whether or not to answer the call.Storing CID Records (In CID Memory)If you are not at home or cannot answer, your telephone’s Caller IDmemory stores the data for the 50 most recent calls you received soyou can see who called while you were unavailable. When the 51stcall is received, the oldest Caller ID record (1st call) is automaticallydeleted.You may review the stored information at any time. Calls receivedsince your last review show as NEW in the display.Reviewing CID Records• Press either the review up or review down button to view thenewest call record.• Press the review down button to scroll through the call recordsfrom the most recent to the oldest.• Press the review up button to scroll through the call records fromthe oldest to the newest.• When all of the messages are viewed, START/END appears in thedisplay.Deleting CID Records1. To delete the record showing in the display, press the delete buttononce.2. To delete all records while reviewing, press and hold the deletebutton until ERASE ALL? shows in the display.3. Press the delete button to delete all CID records.Dialing BackWhen reviewing Caller ID records, you may dialback the phonenumbers shown on the display by pressing the dial button.If you programmed your local area code in the setup menu1. Press the dial button and the display shows PICKUP or ADJ. A 10second timer will also start in the upper right side of the display,letting you know the time remaining until the unit returns to thesummary screen. If you adjust the number to be dialed, the timerwill reset after each adjustment.3. To adjust the phone number, press the dial button. For instance,a 7-digit local number sometimes cannot be dialed becauseit requires a 10-digit or 11-digit format. Press the dial buttonrepeatedly to scroll through the 7, 10, and 11-digit numbers.7-digits: 7-digit telephone number (i.e. 555-5555)10-digits: 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number (i.e. 425-555-5555)11-digits: long distance code 1 + 3-digit area code + 7-digittelephone number (i.e. 425-555-5555)4. To dial the displayed number, pick up the handset before the timerreaches 0. NOW DIALING shows in the display and the number isdialed.If you did not program your local area code in the setup menu1. Use the review up and down buttons to display the number youwant to dial. You will only see 10-digit numbers (i.e. 234-555-1234).2. See steps 2 through 4 in the above section to complete thedialback sequence.NOTE: IF PICKUP PHONE shows on the display, no otherchanges to the number can be made. The informationsent from the telephone company is known to be avalid number to dial back (available only in limitedareas). Once you pickup the phone, the number isautomatically dialed.Caller ID Display MessagesThe following special messages indicate the status of a message orthe unit:NO CALLS The caller memory is empty.UNKNOWN CALLER The incoming call does not have Caller IDservice or their service area is not linked toyours. If UNKNOWN CALLER appears alongwith a calling number, the name information forthat number is not available.Battery power level is low. Please replacethe batteries as soon as possible in order tomaintain Caller ID operation.BLOCKED CALL The incoming caller is registered as “PrivateNumber” and Caller ID information is withheld.START/END You are at the beginning or the end of theCaller IDmemory log.Troubleshooting TipsNo Dial Tone• Check installation- make sure that all connections are secureand not damaged.• Check the hook switch: It should be fully extended when thehandset is lifted from the cradle.• Disconnect the base from the modular phone jack and connectanother phone to the same jack. If there is no dial tone on thesecond phone, the problem might be your wiring or local service.No Display• Replace the batteries.• Make sure the batteries are properly installed.No Information is Displayed After the Phone Rings• You must be subscribed to Caller ID service from your localtelephone company in order to receive Caller ID records.• Wait for the second ring - Caller ID information appears after thesecond ring.Phone Does Not Ring• Make sure the ringer switch is ON.• You may have too many extension phones on your line. Tryunplugging some extension phones.• Check for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone see solutions for “NoDial Tone.”Incoming and Outgoing Voice Volume Low• Are other phones off hook at same time? If so, this is normalcondition as volume drops when additional phones are used atonce.Cannot Dial Out• Make sure the TONE/PULSE dialing mode is set to the type ofphone service you are subscribed to.ServiceIf trouble is experienced with this equipment, for repair or warrantyinformation, please contact customer service at 1-800-448-0329. If theequipment is causing harm to the telephone network, the telephonecompany may request that you disconnect the equipment until theproblem is resolved.This product may be serviced only by the manufacturer or its authorizedservice agents.
