B EFORE Y OU BEGINPARTS CHECKLISTYour package should contain the following items:INTRODUCTIONCAUTION: When using telephone equipment,there are basic safety instructions that shouldalways be followed. Refer to the IMPORTANTSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS provided with thisproduct and save them for future reference.Congratulations on purchasing this GE Speakerphone.This speakerphone has been designed to be simple touse, however, you can reach its full potential morequickly by taking a few minutes to read thisinstruction book.SPEAKERPHONE L AYOUTINSTALLING THE PHONEC ONNECTING THE TELEPHONE L INEChoose the best location to install your speakerphone.Your speakerphone should be placed on a levelsurface such as a desk or table top, or you may mountit on a wall.1. Plug the coiled handset cord into the handset jack,and jack on the left side of the base.2. Plug the straight telephone line cord into a modulartelephone jack.3. Adjust the RINGER volume switch to the desiredlistening level.The unit is properly installed if you pick up thehandset and hear the dial tone. If you don’t hear adial tone recheck all the installation steps.NOTE: If desired, stuff excess telephone line cordinto the pocket on the bottom of the base.W ALL MOUNTING THE P HONEThe speakerphone may also be mounted on the wall(wall plate not included).1. Stuff the extra telephone line cord into the pocketon the bottom of the base and feed the line cordthrough the grooves on either end of the bottom.2. Slip the mounting holes over the wall plate postsand slide the unit down firmly into place.TELEPHONE OPERATIONSPEAKERPHONEFor hands-free operation and convenience, this unit isequipped with a speakerphone.For best speakerphone performance, avoid thefollowing:• Areas with high background noise. (Themicrophone might pick up these sounds andprevent the speakerphone from going into thereceiving mode when you finish talking.)• Surfaces affected by vibration.• Recessed areas such as in a corner, under acupboard, or next to a cabinet, which can generatean echo effect.Note the following guidelines when using thespeakerphone:• The speakerphone works similar to a two-way radioin that you can only listen or talk at one time.• Stay reasonably close to the phone so that you canbe clearly heard by the person to whom you aretalking.• You can adjust the speaker volume by adjusting theVOLUME control on the right side of the base.• The speakerphone indicator comes on when thespeakerphone is in use.NOTE: Only one-way conversation is possible inspeakerphone mode. When you are speaking, youare transmitting. When you are listening, you arereceiving. You can’t do both at the same time. Thephone automatically switches between transmittingand receiving depending on the level of the voice orthe room noise detected by the speakerphonemicrophone.IMPORTANT: Before using the speakerphone, pickup the handset and listen for a dial tone. If you donot hear a dial tone, recheck or repeat theinstallation steps.H ANDSET1. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone.2. Dial the number you want to call.3. When finished, hang up the handset.SPEAKERPHONE1. Press the SPEAKER button on the base and listenfor a dial tone.2. Dial the number you want to call.3. When finished, press the SPEAKER button to hang up.A NSWERING A C ALLNOTE: Make sure the RINGER switch is set to HI orLO or the phone will not ring.HANDSET1. When the phone rings, pick up the handset.2. When finished, hang up the handset.SPEAKERPHONE1. When the phone rings, press the SPEAKER buttonto answer a call.2. When finished press the SPEAKER button to hang up.You may switch between the speakerphone and thehandset during the dialing process or anytime duringa conversation.Speakerphone to Handset - Pick up the handset todisable the speakerphone. The speakerphone indicatorturns off.Handset to Speakerphone - Press the SPEAKERbutton, and then hang up the handset. Thespeakerphone indicator turns on and the handset isdisabled.V OLUMEYou can control the volume of both the handsetreceiver and the speakerphone.While using the handset or speakerphone, adjust thereceiver or speaker volume switch, located on thebase, to the desired listening level.FLASHPress the FLASH button to activate customer callingservices such as call waiting or call transfer, which areprovided by your local phone company.R EDIALYou may redial the last number you called by pressingthe REDIAL button after you get a dial tone.NOTE: The Redial feature holds in memory the lastphone number you dialed (as many as 32 digits). Ifyou pressed any numbers after dialing the phonenumber, (for example, when accessing a voice-menusystem) those numbers also are redialed.MEMORYStore as many as 10 numbers in memory for easydialing. Numbers can be stored in the numbered keys(0, 1-9).IMPORTANT: All numbers stored in Memory will beerased if the phone line is disconnected from thewall telephone phone jack for more than fiveminutes. Write down any stored numbers you do notwant to loose.STORING A N UMBER IN MEMORY1. Make sure the telephone is properly installed. Pickup the handset and listen for the dial tone. If youdon't hear the dial tone, recheck or repeat theinstallation steps.2. Press SPEAKER (or pick up the handset).3. Press STORE.4. Dial the number to be stored (up to 16 digits).5. Press STORE button.6. Press a Memory Location (0, 1-9 on the keypad).7. Press SPEAKER (or hang up the handset).8. Record the phone number on the memorydirectory label.A DDING A P AUSE TO THE DIALINGSEQUENCEUse the REDIAL button to insert a delay in the dialingsequence when storing a number, for example, whenyou need to dial 9 to get an outside line.Press REDIAL at the point in the dialing sequence inwhich a pause is required.The pause time is 4 seconds, if an additional 4seconds is needed, press the REDIAL button again.C HANGING A STORED N UMBERChange a stored number by replacing it with adifferent number.DIALING A N UMBER FROM MEMORYYou can dial numbers from memory when using thehandset or speakerphone. When you get a dial tone,press the MEMORY button followed by the memorylocation (0, 1-9) for the number you want to dial.EQUIPMENT APPROVAL INFORMATIONYour telephone equipment is approved for connection to the Public SwitchedTelephone Network and is in compliance with parts 15 and 68, FCC Rules andRegulations and the Technical Requirements for Telephone Terminal Equipmentpublished by ACTA.1 Notification to the Local Telephone CompanyOn the bottom of this equipment is a label indicating, among otherinformation, the US number and Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for theequipment. You must, upon request, provide this information to yourtelephone company.The REN is useful in determining the number of devices you may connect toyour telephone line and still have all of these devices ring when yourtelephone number is called. In most (but not all) areas, the sum of the RENs ofall devices connected to one line should not exceed 5. To be certain of thenumber of devices you may connect to your line as determined by the REN,you should contact your local telephone company.A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring andtelephone network must comply with the applicable FCC Part 68 rules andrequirements adopted by the ACTA. A compliant telephone cord and modularplug is provided with this product. It is designed to be connected to acompatible modular jack that is also compliant. See installation instructions fordetails.Notes• This equipment may not be used on coin service provided by the telephonecompany.• Party lines are subject to state tariffs, and therefore, you may not be able touse your own telephone equipment if you are on a party line. Check withyour local telephone company.• Notice must be given to the telephone company upon permanentdisconnection of your telephone from your line.• If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to thetelephone line, ensure the installation of this product does not disable youralarm equipment. If you have questions about what will disable alarmequipment, consult your telephone company or a qualified installer.2 Rights of the Telephone CompanyShould your equipment cause trouble on your line which may harm the telephonenetwork, the telephone company shall, where practicable, notify you thattemporary discontinuance of service may be required. Where prior notice is notpracticable and the circumstances warrant such action, the telephone companymay temporarily discontinue service immediately. In case of such temporarydiscontinuance, the telephone company must: (1) promptly notify you of suchtemporary discontinuance; (2) afford you the opportunity to correct the situation;and (3) inform you of your right to bring a complaint to the Commission pursuantto procedures set forth in Subpart E of Part 68, FCC Rules and Regulations.The telephone company may make changes in its communications facilities,equipment, operations or procedures where such action is required in theoperation of its business and not inconsistent with FCC Rules and Regulations. Ifthese changes are expected to affect the use or performance of your telephoneequipment, the telephone company must give you adequate notice, in writing, toallow you to maintain uninterrupted service.INTERFERENCE INFORMATIONThis device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to thefollowing two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference; and(2) This device must accept any interference received, including interference thatmay cause undesired operation.This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class Bdigital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Bydialing each part of the sequence from memory. Press SPEAKER (or pick up the handset).2. Press the MEMORY button and then press 7.3. When you hear the access tone, press MEMORYand then press 8.4. At the next access tone, press MEMORY and then 9.TROUBLESHOOTING G UIDENo dial tone. Won't dial out• Check the hook switch. Make sure it fully extendswhen the handset is lifted from the cradle.• Make sure speakerphone indicator comes on (ifusing speakerphone.)• Unplug the phone, wait 30 seconds, and plug thephone back in. Then lift the handset to check the dialtone.Phone doesn’t ring• Make sure ringer switch is set to LO or HI.• You may have too many extension phones on yourline. Unplug some extension phones.• Check for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone seesolutions for "No dial tone."Low handset or speaker volume• Check the receiver or speaker volume settings.Can’t be heard by other party• Make sure phone cord is securely plugged in.• Make sure extension phones are on the hook at thesame time you're using the phone. It is normal forthe volume to drop when additional extensionphones are used at the same time.Memory dialing• Make sure you entered numbers correctly. (See"Memory.")• Make sure the telephone is properly installed. Pickup the handset and listen for the dial tone.
