GROU~~G ~STRUCTIONSThis appliance must be grounded. In the event of an electrical shortcircuit, grounding reduces the riskof electric shock by providing anescape wire for the electric current. This appliance is equipped with apower cord having a groundingwire with a grounding plug. Theplug must be plugged into an outletthat is properly installed andgrounded. (Fig. 1)WARNING–Improperuse of the grounding plug canresult in a risk of electric shock.[ PREFERRED METHODI Ensure proper groundFia. 1 exists before useConsult a aualified electrician orservice technician if the groundinginstructions are not completelyunderstood, or if doubt exists as towhether the appliance is properlygrounded.Where a standard two-prong wallreceptacle is encountered, it isyour personal responsibility andobligation to have it replaced witha properly grounded three-prongwall receptacle.Do not under any circumstancescut or remove the third (ground)prong from the power cord.Use of Adapter PlugsUsage situations whereappliance’s power cord willbe disconn~ted inf~uentiy.Because of potential safety hazardsunder certain conditions, westrongly recommend against theuse of an adapter plug. However,if you still elect to use an adapter, where local codes permit, aTEMPORARY CONNECTIONmay be made to a properlygrounded two-uron~ wall rece~tacle~y the use of a’UL~isted ada~ter(Fig. 2) which is available at mostlocal hardware stores.TEMPORARY METHOD(Adapterplu s not8permitted In anada)ground and firmconnectionFig. 2 before useThe larger slot in the adapter mustbe aligned with the larger slot inthe wall receptacle to provideproper polarity in the connectionof the power cord.Caution: Attaching the adapterground terminal to the wallreceptacle cover screw does notground the appliance unless thecover screw is metal, and notinsulated, and the wall receptacleis grounded through the housewiring. You should have the circuitchecked by a qualified electricianto make sure the receptacle isproperly grounded. When disconnecting the powercord from the adapter, always holdthe adapter with one hand. If thisis not done, the adapter groundterminal is very likely to break withrepeated use. Should this happen,DO NOT USE the appliance untila proper ground has again beenestablished.Usage situations whereappliance’s power cordwill be disconnectedfrequently.Do not use an adapter plugin these situations because frequentdisconnection of the power cordplaces undue strain on the adapterand leads to eventual failure of theadapter ground terminal. Youshould have the two-prong wallreceptacle replaced with a three-prong (grounding) receptacle by aqualified electrician before usingthe appliance.Use of Extension CordsBecause of potential safety hazardsunder certain conditions, westrongly recommend against theuse of an extension cord. However,if it is necessary to use an extensioncord, use only a 3-wire extensioncord that has a 3-blade groundingplug, and a 3-slot receptacle that -will accept the plug on theappliance. The marked rating ofthe extension cord shall be equal toor greater than the electrical ratingof the appliance (15 amperes). If you do use an extension cordwith your microwave oven, theinterior light may flicker and theblower sound may vary when ovenis in use. Cook times may belonger as well.A short power-supply cord isprovided to reduce risks ofbecoming entangled in or trippingover a longer cord. Do not drapethe cord over a countertop or tablewhere it can be pulled on bychildren or tripped overaccidentally.28
