Oven ShelvesShelves can be cleaned by hand using soap and water orwith an abrasive cleanser. After cleaning, rinse theshelves with clean water and dry. To remove heavy,burned-on soil, you may use scouring pads. Afterscrubbing, wash with soapy water, rinse and dry.Shelves may also be cleaned in self-cleaning oven, but will discolor and lose some luster. See the Self-Cleaning section.Oven BottomThe oven bottom has a porcelain enamel finish. To make cleaning easier, protect the oven bottomfrom excessive spillovers by placing a cookie sheet onthe shelf below the shelf you are cooking on. You canuse aluminum foil if you do not cover the whole shelf. This is particularly important when baking a fruit pieor other foods with a high acid content. Hot fruitfillings or other foods that are highly acidic (such asmilk, tomatoes or sauerkraut, and sauces with vinegaror lemon juice) may cause pitting and damage to theporcelain enamel surface and should be wiped upimmediately. Take care not to touch hot portion ofoven. If a spillover does occur on the oven bottom, allowthe oven to cool first. You can then clean the ovenbottom with soap and water, an abrasive cleanser orscouring pads.l Rinse well to remove any soap before self-cleaning.Broiler Pan and RackAfter broiling, remove the broiler pan and rackfrom the oven. Remove the rack from the pan.Carefully pour out the grease in the pan into aproper container. If food has burned on, sprinkle the rack with detergentwhile hot and cover with wet paper towels or adishcloth. That way, burned-on foods will soak loosewhile the meal is being served.Wash; scour if necessary. Rinse and dry. The broilerpan and rack may also be cleaned in a dishwasher.Do not store a soiled broiler pan and rack anywherein the range. Do not clean in self-cleaning oven.(continued next page)27
