They can actually getsuperheated and not bubbleat all.Superheated liquid will bubbleup out of the cup when it ismoved or when something likea spoon or tea bag is put into it.To prevent this fromhappening and causing injury,do not heat any liquid formore than 2 minutes per cup.After heating, let the cupstand in the microwave for30 seconds before moving itor putting anything into it.■ Avoid heating baby food inglass jars, even with the lidoff. Make sure all infantfood is thoroughly cooked.Stir food to distribute theheat evenly. Be careful toprevent scalding whenwarming formula or breastmilk. The container mayfeel cooler than the milkreally is. Always test the milkbefore feeding the baby.■ Don’t defrost frozenbeverages in narrow-neckedbottles (especiallycarbonated beverages).Even if the container isopened, pressure can buildup. This can cause thecontainer to burst, possiblyresulting in injury.■ Spontaneous boiling—Under certain specialcircumstances, liquidsmay start to boil during orshortly after removal fromthe microwave oven.To prevent burns fromsplashing liquid, werecommend the following:before removing thecontainer from the oven,allow the container tostand in the oven for30 to 40 seconds after theoven has shut off. Do notboil liquids in narrow-necked containers such assoft drink bottles, wineflasks and especiallynarrow-necked coffee cups.Even if the container isopened, excessive steamcan build up and cause itto burst or overflow.■ Hot foods and steam cancause burns. Be carefulwhen opening anycontainers of hot food,including popcorn bags,cooking pouches andboxes. To prevent possibleinjury, direct steam awayfrom hands and face.■ Do not overcook potatoes.They could dehydrate andcatch fire, causing damageto your oven.■ Cook meat and poultrythoroughly—meat to atleast an INTERNALtemperature of 160°F.and poultry to at least anINTERNAL temperatureof 180°F. Cooking tothese temperaturesusually protects againstfoodborne illness.
