Thesystem consists of a Primary Flight Display (PFD), Multi-Function Display(MFD), audio panel, Air Data Computer (ADC), Attitude and HeadingReference System (AHRS), engine sensors and processing unit (GEA), and dualintegrated avionics units (GIA) each containing VHF communications, VHFnavigation, and GPS (Global Positioning System).GIA 63 units are standard and provide non-WAAS GPS position information inaccordance with TSO-C129a class A1. Optional GIA 63W units provideWAAS augmented GPS position. If the optional GIA63W units incorporateGPS software level 3.0 or later, the GPS system meets the requirements of TSO-C145a.The primary function of the PFD is to provide attitude, heading, air data, navigation, and alerting information to the pilot. The PFD may also be used forflight planning. The primary function of the MFD is to provide engineinformation, mapping, terrain information, and flight planning. The audio panelis used for selection of radios for transmitting and listening, intercom functions, and marker beacon functions. The primary function of the VHF Communication portion of the G1000 is toenable external radio communication. The primary function of the VOR/ILSReceiver portion of the equipment is to receive and demodulate VOR, Localizer, and Glide Slope signals. The primary function of the GPS portion of the systemis to acquire signals from the GPS system satellites (and WAAS satellites if soequipped), recover orbital data, make range and Doppler measurements, andprocess this information in real-time to obtain the user's position, velocity, andtime. If the optional TAWS function is installed in the G1000, the pilot will receiveappropriate aural warnings and cautions for terrain and obstacles. The pilotshould refer to the DA 40/DA 40F Pilot’s Guide for the terrain warning andcaution messages and system information.
