2 Select an option:• To record the track based on a distance betweenpoints, select Distance > Change, and enter thedistance.• To record the track based on a time interval, selectTime > Change, and enter the time interval.• To record the track plot based on a variance fromyour course, select Resolution > Change, andenter the maximum error allowed from the truecourse before recording a track point. This is therecommended recording option.ActiveCaptain AppCAUTIONThis feature allows users to submit information. Garminmakes no representations about the accuracy,completeness, or timeliness of information submitted byusers. Any use or reliance on the information submitted byusers is at your own risk.The ActiveCaptain app provides a connection to yourGPSMAP device, charts, maps, and the community for aconnected boating experience.On your mobile device with the ActiveCaptain app, you candownload, purchase, and update maps and charts. Youcan use the app to easily and quickly transfer user data,such as waypoints and routes, connect to the GarminQuickdraw Contours Community, and update devicesoftware. You can also plan your trip, and view and controlthe GPSMAP device from the app.You can connect to the ActiveCaptain community for up-to-date feedback on marinas and other points of interest. Theapp can push smart notifications, such as calls and texts,to your chartplotter display when paired.Getting Started with the ActiveCaptain AppNOTE: The ActiveCaptain feature is only available onmodels that have Wi‑Fi®technology.You can connect a mobile device to the GPSMAP deviceusing the ActiveCaptain app. The app provides a quick andeasy way for you to interact with your chartplotter andcomplete such tasks as sharing data, registering, updatingthe device software, and receiving mobile devicenotifications.1 From the GPSMAP device, select ActiveCaptain.2 From the ActiveCaptain page, select Wi-Fi Network >Wi-Fi > On.3 Enter a name and password for this network.4 Insert a memory card in the GPSMAP device's cardslot.5 Select Set ActiveCaptain Card.NOTICEYou might be prompted to format the memory card.Formatting the card deletes all information saved onthe card. This includes any saved user data, such aswaypoints. Formatting the card is recommended, butnot required. Before formatting the card, you shouldsave the data from the memory card onto the deviceinternal memory.Be sure the card is inserted each time you want to usethe ActiveCaptain feature.6 From the application store on your mobile device,install and open the ActiveCaptain app.7 Bring the mobile device within 32 m (105 ft.) of theGPSMAP device.8 From your mobile device settings, open the Wi‑Ficonnections page and connect to the Garmin device,using the name and password you entered in theGarmin device.For more information about the ActiveCaptain app andfeatures, see the Owner's Manual at www.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP8400-8600 or watch a video atwww.garmin.com/ActiveCaptainVideo.Enabling Smart NotificationsWARNINGDo not read or reply to notifications while operating thevessel. Failure to pay attention to the conditions on thewater can result in vessel damage, personal injury, ordeath.Before your GPSMAP device can receive notifications, youmust connect it to your mobile device and to theActiveCaptain app.1 From the GPSMAP device, select ActiveCaptain >Smart Notifications > Enable Notifications.2 Turn on Bluetooth®technology in the mobile devicesettings.3 Bring the devices within 10 m (33 ft.) of each other.4 From the ActiveCaptain app on the mobile device,select Smart Notifications > Pair with Chartplotter.5 Follow the on-screen instructions to pair the app to theGPSMAP device using Bluetooth technology.6 When prompted, enter the key on your mobile device.7 If necessary, adjust which notifications you receive inyour mobile device settings.TroubleshootingMy device is not creating waypoints in thecorrect locationYou can manually enter a waypoint location to transfer andshare data from one device to the next. If you havemanually entered a waypoint using coordinates, and thelocation of the point does not appear where the pointshould be, the map datum and position format of thedevice may not match the map datum and position formatoriginally used to mark the waypoint.Position format is the way in which the GPS receiver'sposition appears on the screen. This is commonlydisplayed as latitude/longitude in degrees and minutes,with options for degrees, minutes and second, degreesonly, or one of several grid formats.Map datum is a math model which depicts a part of thesurface of the earth. Latitude and longitude lines on apaper map are referenced to a specific map datum.1 Find out which map datum and position format wasused when the original waypoint was created.4 Quick Start Manual |
