3Installing the BatteriesThe eTrex Vista operates on two “AA” batteries (notincluded), which are located in the back of the unit.Rechargeable Alkaline, NiMH, NiCad or Lithium batteriesmay also be used.Battery CoverD-ringBattery CompartmentImportant Note:When replacing batteries, useonly new or fully rechargedbatteries and do not mixAlkaline, NiMH, NiCad orLithium batteries.Rechargeable batteries maytypically display less capacitythan Alkaline batteries.Remove the batteries from theunit if you don’t plan to use itfor several months.Follow the battery manufactur-er’s instructions for proper careand disposal of used batteries.When using ‘Battery Saver’ or‘Use With GPS Off’ mode whennot navigating, Alkaline batter-ies can last up to 12 hours.BatteryInstallation andBacklight/ContrastGetting StartedTo install batteries:1. Remove the battery cover onthe back of the unit. Turn theD-ring 1/4 turn counter-clock-wise & pull away clockwise.2. Insert batteriesobserving thepolarity.3. Reinstall thebattery coverby turning theD-ring 1/4turn.Stored data is not lost whenthe batteries are removed.Press & Release POWERButton to turn BacklightingOn/OffDisplay Backlighting and Contrast Set UpIf lighting conditions make it hard for you to see thedisplay screen, you can adjust the contrast or turn on thebacklight.To turn on the backlighting:1. Press the POWER button to turn on the backlightfrom any page on the unit. The backlight remainson until the set timeout period is completed or thePOWER button is pressed again.The unit is factory set to timeout 15 seconds afterthe last button press. (To reset the backlight time-out, refer to page 51.)To adjust the screen contrast:1. When on the Satelllie Page, use the ZOOM IN orOUT buttons to adjust the contrast.Use ZOOM IN & OUTButtons to Adjust Contrast
