Proceed witha complete charging process before starting (see page 58).To prepare the instrument for field measurements close the serial communica-tion socket and all unused connector sockets with proper stopper (to ensurewaterproof protection) (HI 98183/4/5 only). Use the holed temperaturerubber cork for the temperature socket when temperature probe is connected(HI 98183/4/5 only).Connect the pH electrode and the temperature probe to the BNC and tempera-ture sockets on the top of the instrument. Push the pH electrode sleeve to coverthe connector accomodation. The temperature probe is used in conjunctionwith the pH electrode to utilize the instrument's ATC capability, but it can alsobe used independently to take temperature measurements. If the probe isdisconnected, temperature can be set manually with the ARROW keys (seepage 13 for details).Turn the instrument ON by pressing ON/OFF key.At start-up the display will show the Hanna logo for a few seconds followed bythe percentage indication of the remaining battery charge, then enters themeasurement mode.After measurement switch the instrument off, clean the electrode and store it witha few drops of HI 70300 storage solution in the protection cap (see page 62).The auto-off feature turns the instrument off after a set period (default 30 min)with no button pressed to save battery life. To set another period or to disablethis feature, see SETUP menu on page 33.The auto-off backlight feature turns the backlight off after a set period (default1 min) with no buttons pressed. To set another period or to disable thisfeature, see SETUP menu on page 33.pH MEASUREMENTSTo take a pH measurement remove the electrode protective cap and simplysubmerge the tip of the electrode (4cm/1½”) and thetemperature probe into the sample to be tested.If necessary, press RANGE until the display changes tothe pH mode. Use Mode key to select the pH resolution.
