6 7OPERATIONAL GUIDEINITIAL PREPARATION:The meter is supplied with four 1.5V AA alkaline batteries. Remove thebattery cover on the back of the meter and insert the batteries whilepaying attention to their polarity.Attach the fluoride electrode (#3 on page4), the reference electrode (#2) and thetemperature probe (#1) to their respec-tive connectors on top of the meter.Press ON/OFF to turn the meter on.Note: The temperature probe can also be used on its own to measurethe temperature independently.Note: If the temperature probe is not con-nected, the lower display willindicate 25.0°C with the “°C” sym-bol blinking.MEASUREMENT OF FLUORIDE ION CONCENTRATIONNote: Ensure the meter is calibrated prior to proceeding any further. In order to obtain accurate results, calibrate the meter at atemperature no more than ±3°C away from the sample to bemeasured subsequently.Note: If the fluoride electrode is new, or it has not been used for afew days, it must be soaked in a solution of HI 4010-10 (10ppm fluoride solution + TISAB) for at least 3 hours prior tomeasurement.• Pour about 10-20 mL of the sample in a clean beaker and addthe same quantity of HI 4010-00 (TISAB) solution to the beaker.Mix the solution for a few minutes.• Rinse the electrodes with deionized water and dry them attentivelywith a non-abrasive cloth.• Immerse the fluoride and the refer-ence electrode as well as thetemperature probe to a depth of atleast 1 cm (½”) in the preparedsample.Make sure that the electrodes are not touching the bottom of thebeaker. Position the temperature probe close to the tip of the otherelectrodes.• Wait until the display stabilizes (about10-15 minutes). The fluoride ion con-centration and the temperature will bedisplayed on the upper and lower dis-plays, respectively.Note: It is recommended to mix the sample during the measurement, using a magnetic stirrer set at around 100 rpm.Note: If the temperature probe is not connected, the meter will notcompensate for the temperature variance. In this case, accuratefluoride measurements are only possible if the temperature ofthe sample and the calibration solutions are close (no morethan ±3°C apart).TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTThe temperature can be measured independently from fluoride con-centration.• Immerse the temperature probe at least1 cm (½”) in the prepared sample.• Wait for the reading to stabilize. Thetemperature of the solution will be shownon the lower part of the display.MAGNETIC STIRRERHI 190MPOWERSPEEDONOFF MAX
