26 OPERATIONBasic OperationOnce you have completed the initial setup and configu-ration of the AVR 140, it is simple to operate andenjoy. The following instructions will help you maximizethe enjoyment of your new receiver:Turning the AVR 140 On or Off• When using the AVR 140 for the first time, you mustfirst press the Main Power Switch 1 on the frontpanel to turn the unit on. This places the unit in aStandby mode, as indicated by the amber color of thePower Indicator 2. Once the unit is in Standby,you may begin a listening session by pressing theStandby/On Switch 3 on the front panel, or thePower On Button d or AVR Selector f on theremote. The Power Indicator 2 will turn blue. Thiswill turn the unit on and return it to the input source thatwas last used. The unit may also be turned on fromStandby by pressing any of the Input SelectorButtons eg on the remote or the Input SourceSelector Button ^ on the front panel.Whenever the AVR is turned on, all of the front-panelindicators will light for a few seconds. This is normal,and it is part of the unit’s power-on self-test procedure.NOTE: After pressing one of the Input SelectorButtons egde to turn the unit on, pressthe AVR Selector f to set the remote control to theAVR 140 functions.To turn the unit off at the end of a listening session,simply press the Standby/On Switch 3 on the frontpanel or the Power Off Button a on the remote.Power will be shut off to any equipment plugged intothe rear-panel Switched AC Accessory Outlet ›and the Power Indicator 2 will turn amber.When the remote is used to turn the unit “off,” it isactually placing the system in a Standby mode, as indi-cated by the amber color of the Power Indicator 2.• To program the AVR 140 for automatic turn-off,press the Sleep Button j on the remote. Eachpress of the button will decrease the time beforeshutdown in the following sequence:The sleep time will be displayed in the LowerDisplay Line Q. The front-panel display will dimto one-half brightness when the Sleep function isprogrammed. To view the current sleep time whenthe sleep function has been activated, press theSleep Button j once. The display will return tonormal brightness, and the time until shutdown willappear in the Lower Display Line ı. After a fewseconds, the message will disappear and the dis-play will return to half-brightness.• When the programmed sleep time has elapsed, theunit will automatically turn off. To cancel the Sleepfunction, press and hold the Sleep Buttonj asthe information display returns to normal brightness;continue to hold the button until the Sleep indicatornumbers disappear and the words SLEEPOFF appear in the Lower Display Line Q.When you will be away from home for an extendedperiod of time it is always a good idea to completelyturn the unit off with the front-panel Main PowerSwitch 1.NOTE: All preset memories are lost if the unit is leftturned off by using the Main Power Switch 1 formore than four weeks.Source Selection• To select a source, press any of the InputSelector Buttons egde on theremote control.• The input source may also be changed by pressingthe front-panel Input Source Selector Button ^.Each press of the button will move the input selec-tion through the list of available inputs.• As the input is changed, the AVR 140 will auto-matically switch to the digital input (if selected),component video input, surround mode, outputlevels and night mode status as well as any speakerconfiguration settings established by using theINDEPENDENT Bass Management setting,that were entered during the configuration processfor that source.• When the input source is changed, the new inputname and the digital (or analog) audio input willappear in the Upper Display Line P, and thecurrent surround mode will appear in the LowerDisplay Line ı. The same messages will alsoappear momentarily in the on-screen display in thelower third of the screen (semi-OSD).• When an audio source is selected, the last videoinput used remains routed to the Video 1 Videoand S-Video Outputs ek and Component Video,Composite Video and S-Video Monitor Outputs‚°h. This permits you to simultaneously viewand listen to different sources. This also allows youto choose a video source and then select the 6/8-Channel Direct Inputs P as the audio source.• The front-panel Video 3 Inputs ÓÔ, Optical 3Digital Input * or the Coaxial 3 Digital Input (may be used to connect a device such as a videogame or camcorder to your home entertainmentsystem on a temporary basis. When the front-paneljacks are not in use, you may prefer to install thecovers supplied with your receiver for a neaterappearance. Simply snap them into place. If youwish to use the jacks, press on the left side of eachcover to pivot and remove it.• When DMP is selected as the sourceand a compatible iPod is inserted in an optionalHarman Kardon that is connected toDMP Connector K on the rear panel,navigation messages will appear on any videodisplay connected to the AVR’s Video MonitorOutputs HQ. The remote control or front-panelcontrols may be used to navigate the iPod andaccess many of its functions. These messages willalso appear in the front-panel display, and the iPod’sbattery may be charged. See the owner’s guides forand your iPod for more information.6-Channel/8-Channel Direct Input• There are two input choices available for use withsources such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player thatare connected to the 6/8-Channel Direct Inputsg. Select the appropriate input according tothe way your system and source equipment areconfigured:n 6 CH DIRECT should be used whenthe SBR and SBL inputs are NOT in use. It isassumed that the input source device has its owninternal bass management system. This inputpasses the input from the source directly throughto the volume control without any analog to digitalconversion and it mutes the unused input jacksto prevent unwanted noise from interfering withsystem performance.n 8 CH DIRECT should be used when aninput is connected to all eight 8-Channel DirectInputs g. It is assumed that the input sourcedevice has its own internal bass managementsystem. This input passes the input from thesource directly through to the volume controlwithout any analog-to-digital conversion.Volume and Tone Control• Adjust the volume to a comfortable level using thefront-panel Volume Control Ò or remote VolumeUp/Down Buttons b.• To temporarily silence all speaker outputs, pressthe Mute Button f. This will interrupt the outputto all speakers and the headphone jack, but it willnot affect any recording or dubbing that may bein progress.
