This preventsabruptly loud transitions from disturbing others, without reducing the sonic impact of a digitalsource. Note that the Night mode is only availablewhen the Dolby Digital surround mode is selected. To adjust the Night mode setting from the menupress the OSD Button L so that theMASTER menu appears. Itis particularly important for a digital receiversuch as the AVR, as correct outputs ensure thatyou hear sound tracks with the properdirectionality and intensity.NOTE: Listeners are often confused about theoperation of the surround channels. While someassume that sound should always be comingfrom each speaker, most of the time there willbe little or no sound in the surround channels. This is because they are only used when a moviedirector or sound mixer specifically places soundthere to create ambience, a special effect or tocontinue action from the front of the room tothe rear. When the output levels are properlyset, it is normal for surround speakers tooperate only occasionally. Artificially increasingthe volume to the rear speakers may destroythe illusion of an enveloping sound field thatduplicates the way you hear sound in a movietheater or concert hall.IMPORTANT NOTE: The output level can beadjusted for each digital and analog surroundmode individually. This allows you to compensatefor level differences between speakers, that mayalso vary with the surround mode selected, or toincrease or decrease the level of certain speakersintentionally, depending on the surround modeselected. Note that adjustments made for anysurround mode are effective with all inputs asso-ciated with the same surround mode. Before beginning the output level adjustmentprocess, make certain that all speaker connec-tions have been properly made. The systemvolume should be turned down at first. Finally, make certain that the Balance Control Ò isset to the center “12 o’clock” position.Using EzSetHarman Kardon’s exclusive EzSet remote makesit possible to quickly and accurately set the AVR’soutput levels without the use of a sound pres-sure meter, although manual adjustment is alsoavailable. However, for the easiest set-up, followthese steps while seated in the listening positionthat will be used most often:1. Make certain that all speaker positions havebeen properly configured for their “large” or“small” settings (as outlined above) and turnoff the OSD system if it is in use.2. Adjust the volume so that it is at - 1 5, asshown in the on-screen display or MainInformation Display ˜.3. Select any input associated with the surroundmode for which you want to adjust the outputlevels. Remember that the same adjustmentsmust be made with all other surround modesyou´ve in use.4. Hold the remote in front of you, being surenot to cover the EzSet Sensor MicrophoneQ at the top of the remote and aim it at theAVR, don´t hold it vertically (like a micro-phone).5. Press and hold the SPL Indicator SelectButton * for three seconds. Release itwhen the Program/SPL Indicator 2 stopsflashing and remains lit. Press the5 Button H on the remote if your system isconfigured for 5.1 operation with standardspeakers or when it is configured for 7.1 oper-ation but the surround back speakers are notin use with the surround mode currentlyselected.
