w w w. E l e c t r o n i c H o u s e . c o m J u l y 2 0 0 3 n E H 4 3With so many DVD players on the mar-ket, how do we tell the differencebetween the good and the bad? Well, besides reading magazines for expert opinions, sim-ply look at the features. Some inexpensive playersperform well, but may not have the best build qual-ity (and therefore not last too long), or some play-ers don’t have all the features you want. You won’thave to worry about either in the case ofHarman/Kardon’s DVD 101. With a suggested retailprice of $349, it’s certainly not the cheapest onthe block, but in our experience, you really do getwhat you pay for when it comes to electronics.Inst allatio n I ssuesHooking up the DVD 101 was very easy, since itoffers such a wide selection of audio/video outputs.Seemingly rarely these days, it offers both a coax-ial output and an optical digital output, allowingflexible audio hookup. On the video side, there areprogressive-scan component video outputs as wellas S-Video and composite, in case you don’t havea component input on your TV.The build quality is excellent, with a solid feelto it that escapes many other players. Most DVDplayers feel like the cheapest of VCRs, but not theDVD 101. It has a high-end feel, which is always agood thing.P e rf o rm a n c e / F e a t u r e sOnce the DVD 101 was set up, we watched a bevyof movies and music DVDs. The picture quality onour progressive-scan monitor was excellent. In fact,it was as good as our $1,000 reference DVD playerfrom last year. While showing challenging DVDs likethe newly remastered The Mission and PeterGabriel’s Secret World Live, it brought both ofthese films to life in a vibrant, restrained way. Onbrighter fare like Two Weeks Notice, the outdoorscenes looked natural and realistic, which is the signof any good DVD player. Overall, we were veryimpressed by the picture on this DVD player. Usingthe remote control was also very straightforward, and it worked well in all conditions. It’s comfortablein the hand, and is easy to use in a darkened room. The Last Wo r dTwo features that we felt should have been includ-ed in this price range were SACD and DVD-Audioplayback. Both of these features are becoming moreprevalent as the available software selection increas-es dramatically, and we were surprised that the DVD101 didn’t include at least one of these options.Otherwise, we were very happy with the DVD 101’sperformance and abilities. It was easy to use anda pleasure to turn on and enjoy. The sign of a greatproduct: Did we want to send it back to the man-ufacturer? Not any time soon.
