10 OPERATIONOperationLoading and Unloading DiscsTo load a disc, first turn the unit on (if not soalready) by pressing the Power Switch 2 onthe front panel or the Power On button 1 onthe remote, then press the Open/Close button3 F taking care to make certain that thespace in front of the drawer is not obstructed.When the unit is turned off (to Standby), press-ing the Play button 4 9 on the front or onthe remote will automatically turn on the CDplayer and start playback. Also, pressing theOpen/Close button from Standby switches onthe player directly and opens the drawer.Load the disc in the tray with the printed (label)side facing up. Make certain that the disc is cen-tered in the tray. Either 12cm (5") or 8cm (3")discs may be used. When an 8cm disc is played, itshould be carefully centered within the smallerridges inside the cassette drawer.To retract the drawer back into the player afterloading a disc, press the Open/Close button 3F.When the drawer is closed the display willindicate the total number of tracks on the discand the total running time of the disc.The drawer will also close when the Play button4 9 is pressed. The drawer will close and thedisc will start playing the first track.To remove a disc from the player, press theOpen/Close button 3 F. The drawer willopen, allowing the disc to be removed.Disc Handling NotesWhen loading or unloading discs, it is best tohold them by the edges.While Compact Discs are very reliable, roughhandling may damage them. Avoid scratching thebottom (non-printed) side of discs, or anyhandling which will leave fingerprints.To avoid damage to the disc and player, alwaysseat discs so that they are centered in the tray.Do not lift the player while the disc tray isopening or closing, as this may cause the disc tounseat from the tray and possibly jam.Normal PlayTo play a disc, first turn the HD 990 on using thePower Switch 2 on the front panel or thePower On button 1 on the remote control.When the unit is turned off (to Standby), press-ing the Play button 4 9 on the front or onthe remote will automatically turn on the CDplayer and start playback.To load or change a disc open the disc drawerby pressing the Open/Close button 3 F.Place a disc in the tray following the instructionsshown above.Pressing the Open/Close button once a disc hasbeen carefully seated will close the disc drawerwhile the message CLOSING will appear in theinformation display. As soon as the tray is closedthe display will show the message READINGwhile the Table Of Contents (TOC) of the disc isread. Note that particulary with CD-RW discsthis tracking may take some time due to thereflectibility and data structure being differentfrom normal discs. Afterwards, the InformationDisplay will show the total number of tracks andthe total running time of the disc. Note that withMP3-CDs, the total running time will not beshown.The drawer will also close when the Play button4 9 is pressed. The drawer will close and thedisc will start playing the first track.To play all of the tracks on the disc in order, pressthe Play button 4 9. A play symbol flwill appear in the Information Display 1, aswell as indication of Track number and Timeelapsed..To play all of the tracks in random order, pressthe Random button C. The RANDOM indica-tor will light when that mode is in use. Randomcan be activated also while a track is playing.When Random is activated while programmedplay is in use (see page 13), all programmedtracks will be played in random order.You may also select a specific track by pressingthe Skip buttons 7 7 until the desired tracknumber is displayed (see page 12). The trackmay also be selected directly by entering thetrack number via the Numeric Controls 2,simply enter the track number by pressing thebuttons that correspond to the desired track.Note that when a two- or three-digit track num-ber is being entered, the second and third digitof the number must be pressed within two sec-onds of the first digit.
