12 OPERATIONBasic OperationThe HK 3380 is simple to operate, and very simi-lar to stereo receivers you may have used in thepast. This section will explain the use of severalfeatures that may be new to you.• Install the two supplied AAA batteries in theremote as shown. Be certain to observe the (+)and (–) polarity indicators shown in the bottomof the battery compartment.• When using the HK 3380 for the first time, theunit will be in a standby mode, as indicated bythe amber color of the Power Indicator 3.Once the unit is in standby, you may begin a lis-tening session by pressing the System PowerControl 2 on the front panel or the MainPower On button å on the remote. Note thatthe Power Indicator 3 will turn red, thenblue. This will turn the unit on and return it to theinput source that was last used. The unit mayalso be turned on from standby by pressing anyof the Source Selector buttons on the frontpanel 89!#$&Ú or remote ç.To turn the unit off at the end of a listening ses-sion simply press the System Power Control2 on the front panel or the Main Power Offbutton ∫ on the remote. This places the unit inthe Standby mode, and the Power Indicator3 will turn amber to remind you that the unit isready for operation when a power command isreceived from the remote.Power to any equip-ment plugged into the rear panel Switched ACOutlets will be shut off.When the remote is used to turn the unit “off”, itis actually placing the system in a standby mode,as indicated by the amber color of the PowerIndicator 3.• To dim the brightness of the front panel dis-play, press the Dimmer button ˙ on theremote or on the front panel ^.The first press will dim the lights to half normal.A second press will turn the display completelyoff. Press the Dimmer button ˙^ again torestore the display to normal brightness.Source Selection• To select a source at any time, press any of theSource Selector buttons on the remote ç orfront panel 89!#$&Ú.• When a video source is selected, if you haveconnected a video device to the video input jackfor that source, and if you have connected theVideo Monitor Output to the compositevideo input of your TV or video display, you will beable to enjoy video programs from a broadcast,cable or satellite television system; a VCR or hard-disk video recorder; a DVD player; or any othervideo device with analog line-level audio outputsand a composite video output.NOTE: Although the HK 3380 is an audio/videoreceiver, it is not a surround sound receiver. Audiowill be played in two-channel stereo or monaural,depending on how the program material is encod-ed, and you will not be able to hear any additionalchannels that may be encoded in your sourcematerials. You will not be able to make any digitalaudio connections through the HK 3380. The HK3380 is designed to provide video entertainment ina small system application that includes devicessuch as a TV, VCR or DVD player located in a bed-room, office or spare room, or as part of a multi-room system when used with a multiroom con-troller.• During a listening session you may wish toadjust the Bass Ó, Treble Ô and Balance controls to suit your listening tastes.• Adjust the volume to a comfortable level usingthe front panel Volume Control Ò or remoteMaster Volume Up/Down π buttons. The vol-ume level is displayed as a negative number ofdecibels (dB) in the Main Information DisplayÛ. The volume level is relative to a maximumvolume level that has been assigned the value of0dB. It is important that you make sure never toexceed this maximum volume level (0dB) at anytime, in order to avoid possible damage to yourloudspeakers due to “clipping”, a type of distor-tion that is not audible to the human ear until itis severe enough to permanently damage mostloudspeakers. It is also possible, depending uponthe program material, for clipping to occur at vol-umes below the maximum volume level.• To temporarily silence all speaker outputs, pressthe Mute button ®5. This will cut the outputto all Pre and Sub Outs and to all speakers, but itwill not affect any recording or dubbing that maybe in progress. When the system is muted, theMUTE indicator will light in the Main Infor-mation Display Û and the Volume/Muteindicator Ú will flash. Press the Mute button®5 again to return to normal operation.• For private listening, plug the 6,3 mm stereophone plug from a pair of stereo headphonesinto the front panel Headphone jack 4.• One or two separate sets of speakers may beconnected to the HK 3380. To listen to one of thespeaker sets, press the Speaker button 6 or 7on the front panel corresponding to the desiredspeakers or press them both to listen to bothspeakers pairs. The active speakers will be indicat-ed by a lit blue LED in the Speaker IndicatorsÙ display. Both sets of speakers may be turnedoff for private headphone listening.IMPORTANT NOTE: When two speaker pairsare connected to the HK 3380 and are to beused simultanously, the impedance of eachspeaker must not be lower than 8 Ohms.• To program the HK 3380 for automatic turn-off, press the Sleep button on the front panel( or remote ©. Each press of the button willincrease the time before shutdown in the follow-ing sequence:The sleep time will be displayed in the MainInformation Display Û and it will countdown until the time has elapsed.When the programmed time has elapsed, theunit will automatically turn off (to Standbymode). Note that the front panel display will dimto one-half brightness when the Sleep function isprogrammed. To cancel the Sleep function, pressthe Sleep button ( © or simply hold it pressedfor some seconds until the Sleep indicator num-bers disappear and the Main Information Displayshows the current source. Pressing any controlbutton while the Sleep control is activated willmomentarily return the Main Information Displayto full brightness for increased legibility withoutinterrupting the Sleep function.Tuner OperationThe HK 3380’s tuner is capable of tuning AM, FMand FM Stereo broadcast stations. Stations maybe tuned manually or automatically, or they maybe stored as favorite station presets and recalledfrom a 30-position memory.Station Selection1. Press the AM/FM & buttons on the frontpanel or on the remote ç to select the tuner asan input.2. Press these buttons again at any time toswitch between AM and FM.3. To automatically search for the next higher- orlower-frequency station that has an acceptablesignal hold the Tuning D or E button )on the front or î or † on the remote pressedand release it as soon as the tuner starts the fre-quency search. To tune to the next station, pressthe button again. Tap the Tuning button toadvance one frequency increment at a time, orpress and hold it to locate a specific station.When the TUNED indicator lights, the station isproperly tuned and should be heard with clarity.4. Stations may also be tuned directly by pressingthe Direct button ∆, and then pressing the90min 80min 70min 60min 50min40min 30min 20min 10min OFFOperation |
