Color-Coding SystemThe HKS 6 and the HKTS 15 use thechannel color-coding system establishedby the Consumer Electronics Association tomake setting up your home theater speakersystem as easy as possible. Your systemincludes a set of colored stickers that maybe placed near the speaker terminals ofeach of the satellite speakers. In addition, theincluded speaker wires have colored bandsat each end to assist you in connecting themcorrectly. Use the brown sticker and cable forthe surround back left speaker, and the tansticker and cable for the surround back rightspeaker. Although the wires included withyour HKS 6 speakers are color-coded for thesurround back left and right channels, they areinterchangeable with the wires supplied withthe HKTS 15 system. It doesn’t matter whichsatellite speaker is used for any of the frontor rear positions. (The center speaker andpowered subwoofer of the HKTS 15 arealready color-coded.)Before you begin to connect cables, it isimportant to set up your speakers in theircorrect locations in the room.Optimally, the speakers should be placedin a circle with the listening position at itscenter. The distance from the listeningposition to the video display forms the radiusof the circle. The speakers should be angled so that theydirectly face the listening position. The front left and right speakers are placedalong the circle, about 30 degrees fromthe center speaker or video display andangled toward the listener. When used as a stereo pair, the speakersshould be placed the same distance fromeach other as they are from the listener. It is best to place the front left/right andcenter speakers as close to the same heightas possible, preferably about the sameheight as the listener’s ears. In any event, thecenter speaker should be no more than twofeet above or below the left/right speakers. When the HKS 6 speakers are usedto upgrade an HKTS 15 system to a 7.1-channel system, the side surround speakersshould be placed even with and facing thelistening position, 90 degrees from thecenter speaker. The HKS 6 speakers arethen placed in the left and right surroundback speaker positions, 150 degrees fromthe center speaker. When setting up your system, refer to thediagram above instead of the diagram in theHKTS 15 owner’s guide. The subwoofer’s location is less critical, sincelow-frequency sounds are omnidirectional.Placing the subwoofer close to a wall or ina corner will reinforce the low frequencies, and may create a “boomy” sound. You maywish to experiment over time by placingthe subwoofer where the listener normallysits and then walking around the room untilthe low frequencies sound best. Place thesubwoofer in that spot.SPEAKER PLACEMENT 3SPEAKER PLACEMENTCenter SpeakerVideo ScreenFront RightSpeakerFront LeftSpeakerSide SurroundLeft SpeakerBack SurroundLeft SpeakerSide SurroundRight SpeakerBack SurroundRight Speaker90°150°90°150°30° 30°
