SPEAKER CONNECTIONS 5Connection GuideIMPORTANT NOTE: Before making speakerconnections, be certain that your receiveror audio power amplifier is turned off and, preferably, unplugged from its AC powersource.Speakers and electronics terminals havecorresponding (+) and (–) terminals. Mostmanufacturers of speakers and electronics, including Harman Kardon, use red todenote the (+) terminal and black forthe (–) terminal.Newer Harman Kardon receivers conform tothe new CEA standard and therefore use acolor other than red for the (+) terminal toindicate some speaker positions: e.g., bluefor surround left positive (+). However, theblack terminal will always be the negative (–)connection. Please see the owner’s guide foryour AVR Series receiver for further details.Although the HKS 9 speakers may be placedin the front, side surround or surround backpositions, the speaker wires provided with thesystem have been color-coded brown for thesurround back left speaker and tan for thesurround back right speaker. When used withthe HKTS 18 system, it is recommended thatyou maintain the color-coding system for allcables to simplify setup, and to ensure thateach wire in a channel pair (e.g., front left andright) is the same length as its partner. The (+) lead of the speaker wire is notedwith a stripe. It is important to connect bothspeakers identically: (+) on the speaker to(+) on the amplifier and (–) on the speakerto (–) on the amplifier. Wiring “out of phase”results in thin sound, weak bass and a poorstereo image. With the advent of multichannel surroundsound systems, connecting all of the speakersin your system with the correct polarityremains equally important in order to preservethe proper ambience and directionality of theprogram material. To connect the supplied speaker wires tothe satellite speaker terminals located onthe bottom of each speaker, press the redor black tab, insert the bare end of the wireinto the hole and release the tab. Gentlytug on the wire to make sure that it isfully inserted.Configuring Your Receiver orProcessorMany receivers and processors featureprogrammable bass-management capability, which allows the component to output thelowest frequencies (the bass information)exclusively to a separate subwoofer speaker,or to a main speaker that is capable ofhandling low frequencies, or sometimes toboth. During the setup process you will beasked to specify whether the speaker fora given channel is “Large” or “Small.” Theterms “Large” and “Small” do not refer tophysical size, but to the size of the frequencyrange the speaker is capable of handling. When configuring your receiver or processorfor the channels where HKS 9 speakers arebeing used, select “Small.”SPEAKER CONNECTIONSFront-, Surround- or Surround Back-ChannelReceiver/Amplifier OutputLeft Right+–+–– + – +Left Speaker Right Speaker
