7IMPORTANT NOTE: Before making speakerconnections, be certain that your receiver oraudio power amplifier is turned off andpreferably unplugged from its AC powersource. The HKTS 5 should not be connectedto an AC power source until all speakerwire connections have been made.Separate and strip the ends of the speakerwire as shown. Speakers and electronicsterminals have corresponding (+) and (–)terminals. Most manufacturers of speakersand electronics, including Harman Kardon, use red to denote the (+) terminal andblack for the (–) terminal.Newer Harman Kardon receivers conform tothe new CEA standard and therefore use acolor other than red or black for the (+) ter-minal to indicate some speaker positions:e.g., left surround. Please see the owner’sguide for your AVR Series receiver for fur-ther details. The (+) lead of the speaker wire is notedwith a stripe. It is important to connectboth speakers identically: (+) on the speakerto (+) on the amplifier and (–) on thespeaker to (–) on the amplifier. Wiring “outof phase” results in thin sound, weak bassand a poor stereo image. With the advent of multichannel surroundsound systems, connecting all of the speakersin your system with the correct polarityremains equally important in order to pre-serve the proper ambience and directionalityof the program material. To connect the supplied speaker wires tothe satellite and center speaker terminals, press the red or black plastic tab for thedesired terminal, insert the bare end of thewire into the hole and release the tab.Gently tug on the wire to make sure that itis fully inserted.Speaker-Level Connection GuideSPEAKER CONNECTIONS
