166 IBM Eserver p5 590 and 595 System HandbookAutomating various service procedural tasks, instead of relying on the servicerepresentative can help remove or significantly reduce the likelihood of servicerepresentative induced errors. Many service tasks can be automated. For example, the HMC can guide theservice representative to: Interpret error information. Prepare components for removal or initiate them after install. Set and reset system identify LEDs as part of the Guiding Light serviceapproach. Automatically link to the next step in the service procedure based on inputreceived from the current step. Update the service history log, indicating the service actions taken as part ofthe repair procedure. The history log helps to retain an accurate view of theservice scenarios in case future actions are needed.6.7 AIX 5L RAS featuresThe RAS features described in the previous sections are all based on the p5-590and p5-595 hardware. There are some additional RAS features that work inconjunction with the AIX 5L operating system, and some that are entirelydependent on AIX 5L. The following outlines some of the AIX 5L RAS features. Unrecoverable error analysisAIX 5L analyzes the hardware reported unrecoverable errors. If the process isa user process, it will be terminated. If the process is within the AIX 5L kernel, then the operating system will be terminated. Again, terminating AIX 5L in apartition will not impact any of the other partitions. Error log RASUnder very rare circumstances, such as powering off the system exactly whilethe errdaemon is writing into the error log, the error log may becomecorrupted. In AIX 5L Version 5.3 there are minor modifications made to theerrdaemon to improve its robustness. The difference from the previousversions of AIX and AIX 5L is that the errdaemon used to reset the log file if itwas corrupted, instead of repairing it.
