Misuse canalso cause damage to the battery or degradation of batteryperformance.R DANGER! NEVER short terminals (or charging ter-minals) of the battery pack. Also, current may flow into nearbymetal objects such as a necklace, so be careful when placingbattery packs (or the radio) in handbags, etc.Simply carrying with or placing near metal objects such asa necklace, etc. may cause shorting. This may damage notonly the battery pack, but also the radio.R DANGER! DO NOT hammer or otherwise impact thebattery. Do not use the battery if it has been severely impact-ed or dropped, or if the battery has been subjected to heavypressure. Battery damage may not be visible on the outsideof the case. Even if the surface of the battery does not showcracks or any other damage, the cells inside the battery mayrupture or catch fire.R DANGER! NEVER use or leave battery pack in areaswith temperatures above +60°C (+140°F). High temperaturebuildup in the battery, such as could occur near fires or stoves, inside a sun heated car, or in direct sunlight may cause thebattery to rupture or catch fire. Excessive temperatures mayalso degrade battery performance or shorten battery life.R DANGER! DO NOT expose the battery to rain, snow, seawater, or any other liquids. Do not charge or use a wetbattery. If the battery gets wet, be sure to wipe it dry beforeusing.R DANGER! KEEP battery packs away from fire. Fire orheat may cause them to rupture or explode. Dispose of usedbattery packs in accordance with local regulations.R DANGER! NEVER solder the battery terminals, orNEVER modify the battery pack. This may cause heat gen-eration, and the battery may burst, emit smoke or catch fire.R DANGER! Use the battery only with the radio for whichit is specified. Never use a battery with any other equipment,or for any purpose that is not specified in this instructionmanual.R DANGER! If fluid from inside the battery gets in youreyes, blindness can result. Rinse your eyes with clean water, without rubbing them, and see a doctor immediately.R WARNING! Immediately stop using the battery if itemits an abnormal odor, heats up, or is discolored or de-formed. If any of these conditions occur, contact your Icomdealer or distributor.R WARNING! Immediately wash, using clean water, anypart of the body that comes into contact with fluid from insidethe battery.R WARNING! NEVER put the battery in a microwaveoven, high-pressure container, or in an induction heatingcooker. This could cause a fire, overheating, or cause thebattery to rupture.CAUTION: Always use the battery within the specifiedtemperature range, for the radio –30°C to +60°C (–22°Fto +140°F), and the battery itself –20°C to +60°C (–4°F to+140°F). Using the battery out of its specified temperaturerange will reduce the battery’s performance and battery life. Please note that the specified temperature range of the bat-tery may exceed that of the radio. In such cases, the radiomay not work properly because it is out of its operating tem-perature range.CAUTION: Shorter battery life could occur if the battery isleft fully charged, completely discharged, or in an excessivetemperature environment (above +50°C; +122°F) for an ex-tended period of time. If the battery must be left unused for along time, it must be detached from the radio after discharg-ing. You may use the battery until the remaining capacity isabout half, then keep it safely in a cool dry place at the follow-ing temperature range:–20˚C to +50˚C (–4˚F to +122˚F) (within a month)–20˚C to +35˚C (–4˚F to +95˚F) (within three months)BESURE to replace the battery with a new one after fiveyears, even if still holds a charge. The inside battery materialwill deteriorate after a period of time, even with little use.•ChargingcautionR DANGER! NEVER charge the battery pack in ar-eas with extremely high temperatures, such as near fires orstoves, inside a sun-heated vehicle, or in direct sunlight. Insuch environments, the safety/protection circuit in the batterywill activate, causing the battery to stop charging.R DANGER! NEVER charge or leave the battery in thebattery charger beyond the specified time for charging. If thebattery is not completely charged by the specified time, stopcharging and remove the battery from the battery charger.Continuing to charge the battery beyond the specified timelimit may cause a fire, overheating, or the battery may rup-ture.R WARNING! NEVER insert the radio (battery attachedto the radio) into the charger if it is wet or soiled. This couldcorrode the battery charger terminals or damage the charger. The charger is not waterproof.NOTE: Charge the battery within the specified temperaturerange: BC-160 and BC-171 (0˚C to +45˚C; +32˚F to +113˚F),BC-119 and BC-121 (+10˚C to +40˚C; +50˚F to +104˚F).Icom recommends charging the battery at +20˚C (+68˚F).The battery may heat up or rupture if charged out of the spec-ified temperature range. Additionally, battery performance orbattery life may be reduced.R DANGER! NEVER short the terminals of the batterypack.R DANGER! Use and charge only specified Icom batterypacks with Icom radios or Icom chargers. Only Icom batterypacks are tested and approved for use with Icom radios orcharged with Icom chargers. Using third-party or counterfeitbattery packs or chargers may cause smoke, fire, or causethe battery to burst.R WARNING! NEVER hold the radio that the antennais very close to, or touching exposed parts of the body, es-pecially the face or eyes, while transmitting. The radio willperform best if the microphone is 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches)away from the lips and the radio is vertical.R WARNING! NEVER operate the radio with a head-set or other audio accessories at high volume levels. Hear-ing experts advise against continuous high volume operation. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volumelevel or discontinue use.R WARNING! NEVER operate the radio while drivinga vehicle. Safe driving requires your full attention—anythingless may result in an accident.CAUTION: MAKE SURE the flexible antenna, batterypack and jack cover are securely attached to the radio, andthat the antenna and battery pack are dry before attachment.Exposing the inside of the radio to dust or water will result inserious damage to the radio.DO NOT operate the radio near unshielded electrical blast-ing caps or in an explosive atmosphere.DO NOT push [PTT] when you do not actually intend totransmit.DO NOT use or place the radio in direct sunlight or in ar-eas with temperatures below –30°C (–22°F) or above +60°C(+140°F). The basic operations, transmission and reception ofthe radio are guaranteed within the specified operating tem-perature range. However, the LCD display may not be operatecorrectly, or show an indication in the case of long hours ofoperation, or after being placed in extremely cold areas.DO NOT modify the radio. The specifications may changeand then not comply with the requirements of a correspondedregulation. The radio warranty does not cover any problemscaused by unauthorized modification.DO NOT use harsh solvents such as benzine or alcoholwhen cleaning, as they will damage the radio surfaces.BECAREFUL! The radio will become hot when operatingit continuously for long periods of time.BE CAREFUL! The radio meets IP67 requirements fordust-tight and waterproof protection. However, once the radiohas been dropped, dust-tight and waterproof protection can-not be guaranteed because of possible damage to the radio’scase or the waterproof seal.Even when the radio power is OFF, a slight current still flowsin the circuits. Remove the battery pack from the radio whennot using it for a long time. Otherwise, the installed batterypack will become exhausted, and will need to be rechargedor replaced.MAKE SURE to turn the radio power OFF before con-necting the supplied or optional equipment.EXPLICIT DEFINITIONSPRECAUTIONSPRECAUTIONS (Continued)The GPS receiver may not work if the transceiver transmitsnear the 510 MHz.
