The radio will become hot when operating itcontinuously for long periods of time.BE CAREFUL! The radio meets IP67* requirements for dust-tight and waterproof protection. However, once the radio hasbeen dropped, dust-tight and waterproof protection cannot beguaranteed because of possible damage to the radio’s case orthe waterproof seal.*Only when the jack cover or the optional HM-168LWP is at-tached.Even when the radio power is OFF, a slight current still flows inthe circuits. Remove the battery pack from the radio when notusing it for a long time. Otherwise, the installed battery packwill become exhausted, and will need to be recharged or re-placed.MAKE SURE to turn the radio power OFF before connectingthe supplied or optional equipment.Battery caution•R DANGER! NEVER short terminals (or charging termi-nals) of the battery pack. Also, current may flow into nearbymetal objects such as a necklace, so be careful when plac-ing the battery packs (or the radio) in handbags, etc.Simply carrying with or placing near metal objects such asa necklace, etc. may cause shorting. This may damage notonly the battery pack, but also the radio.R DANGER! DO NOT hammer or otherwise impact the bat-tery pack. Do not use the battery pack if it has been severe-ly impacted or dropped, or if it has been subjected to heavypressure. The damage may not be visible on the outside ofthe case. Even if the surface of the battery pack does notshow cracks or any other damage, the cells inside may rup-ture or catch fire.R DANGER! NEVER use or leave the battery pack in areaswith temperatures above +60°C. High temperature buildupin the battery pack, such as could occur near fires or stoves, inside a sun heated car, or in direct sunlight may cause thebattery pack to rupture or catch fire. Excessive temperaturesmay also degrade performance or shorten life.R DANGER! DO NOT expose the battery pack to rain, snow, seawater, or any other liquids. Do not charge or usea wet battery pack. If the battery pack gets wet, be sure towipe it dry before using.R DANGER! KEEP the battery pack away from fire. Fireor heat may cause them to rupture or explode. Dispose of aused battery pack in accordance with local regulations.R DANGER! NEVER solder the battery pack terminals, orNEVER modify the battery pack. This may cause heat gen-eration, and the battery pack may burst, emit smoke or catchfire.R DANGER! Use the battery pack only with the radio forwhich it is specified. Never use a battery pack with any oth-er equipment, or for any purpose that is not specified in thisinstruction manual.R DANGER! If fluid from inside the battery pack gets inyour eyes, blindness can result. Rinse your eyes with cleanwater, without rubbing them, and see a doctor immediately.R WARNING! Immediately stop using the battery pack ifit emits an abnormal odor, heats up, or is discolored or de-formed. If any of these conditions occur, contact your Icomdealer or distributor.R WARNING! Immediately wash, using clean water, anypart of the body that comes into contact with fluid from in-side the battery pack.R WARNING! NEVER put the battery pack in a microwaveoven, high-pressure container, or in an induction heatingcooker. This could cause a fire, overheating, or cause thebattery pack to rupture.CAUTION: Always use the battery pack within the specifiedtemperature range, for the radio (–30°C to +60°C) and thebattery pack itself ( –20°C to +60°C). Using the battery packout of its specified temperature range will reduce the perfor-mance and the life. Please note that the specified tempera-ture range of the battery pack may exceed that of the radio. In such cases, the radio may not work properly because it isout of its operating temperature range.CAUTION: Shorter battery life could occur if the batterypack is left fully charged, completely discharged, or in anexcessive temperature environment (above +50°C) for anextended period of time. If the battery pack must be left un-used for a long time, it must be detached from the radio afterdischarging. You may use the battery pack until the remain-ing capacity is about half, then keep it safely in a cool anddry place at the following temperature range:–20°C to +50°C (within a month)–20°C to +40°C (within three months)–20°C to +20°C (within a year)BE SURE to replace the battery pack with a new one af-ter five years, even if still holds a charge. The inside batterymaterial will deteriorate after a period of time, even with lit-tle use.Charging caution•R DANGER! NEVER charge the battery pack in areas withextremely high temperatures, such as near fires or stoves, inside a sun-heated vehicle, or in direct sunlight. In such en-vironments, the safety/protection circuit in the battery packwill activate, causing the battery to stop charging.R WARNING! NEVER charge or leave the battery pack inthe battery charger beyond the specified time for charging. If the battery pack is not completely charged by the speci-fied time, stop charging and remove the battery pack fromthe battery charger. Continuing to charge the battery packbeyond the specified time limit may cause a fire, overheat-ing, or the battery pack may rupture.R WARNING! NEVER insert the radio (the battery pack at-tached to the radio) into the charger if it is wet or soiled. Thiscould corrode the battery charger terminals or damage thecharger. The charger is not waterproof.NOTE: Charge the battery pack within the specified tem-perature range of +10°C to +40°C. Otherwise, the charg-ing time will be longer, but the battery pack will not reach afull charge. While charging, at a point after the temperaturegoes out of the specified range, the charging will automati-cally stop.Thank you for choosing the IC-V88 vhf transceiveror the IC-U88 uhf transceiver.READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS carefully and com-pletely before using the transceiver.1-1-32 Kamiminami, Hirano-ku, Osaka 547-0003, Japan A-7140H-1EX Printed in Japan© 2014 Icom Inc.PRECAUTIONSExplicit DefinitionsDWORD DEFINITIONRDANGER!
