4 Ideal airtherm - Air Source Heat Pump - InstallationDOMESTICPREMISESOUTSIDEAIRThe EVAPORATOR collects heat from theoutside ambient air, pre-heated by the sun. With Ideal, heat pumps high volumes ofoutside air are drawn into the unit by the fanand expelled through the evaporator fins. The evaporator has liquid refrigerantpassing through it, which is at aconsiderably lower temperature than theambient air, therefore the air gives up itsheat to the refrigerant, which then vaporizes. This pre-heated vapour now travels to-The COMPRESSOR where it iscompressed and upgraded to amuch higher temperature. The hotvapour now enters-The EXPANSION DEVICE and fromthere, now at low pressure, it isreturned to the evaporator and thecycle starts again. The CONDENSER where it is surroundedby water from the heating system. The heatis given up to the cooler water and the nowcooler refrigerant returns to its former liquidstate but still under high pressure from thecompressor. This pressure is released bypassing the liquid through -Coefficient of PerformanceThe efficiency of a Heat Pump is usually called its 'Coefficient of Performance' - (C.O.P.) which is simply a ratio ofheat output to energy input, both being expressed in kW. Thus a Heat Pump absorbing 1 kW of electricity, collecting4 kW of energy from the air, and delivering 5 kW of heat to the pool water is said to have a C.O.P. of 5:1.Naturally this ratio will vary according to the temperature of the water and the ambient air.HOW THE HEAT PUMP WORKSThe Ideal airtherm Heat Pump provides thermodynamic heating by means of a vapour compression cycle(similar to that employed in a conventional refrigerator), in addition to operating as an active solar collector.
