2 3Unpacking the SpeakerIf you suspect damage from transit,report it immediately to your dealer.Keep the shipping carton and pack-ing materials for future use.Proper Placement and SetupThe P52OWS surround speakercan be used in side or rear chan-nel applications. Please refer tothe placement and setup methodfor your application. The first stepis to determine the application forwhich your P52OWS surroundspeaker will be used.If you are using the P52OWS forsurround channels in a 5-channelhome theater system or for sidechannels in a 6- or 7-channel hometheater system (Application 1),please follow the directions below.To use the P52OWS as a rearspeaker in a 6- or 7-channel hometheater system (Application 2),please follow the directions onpage 3.The P52OWS also possesses theunique capacity to behave as twodistinct loudspeakers from oneenclosure. This allows you to usea single P52OWS for both the leftand right rear speakers in a 7-channel system. If you are usingthe P52OWS this way, please fol-low the instructions on page 3(Application 3).Placement (Application 1)When using the P52OWS for thesurround channels in a 5-channelhome theater system or for sidechannels in a 6-or 7-channel hometheater system, refer to Figures 1and 2. The speakers should beplaced perpendicular to or slightlybehind the primary listening loca-tion, as shown.Setting the Surround ConfigurationSelectorIt is generally recommended thatthe selectable surround mode con-figuration be set to Bipole. Thiswill provide a large ambient sur-round sound field while allowingfor precise localization of soundeffects that the filmmaker hasplaced in the surround tracks.If the side walls on which thespeaker will be mounted are morethan about 14' (4.3m) from thelistening position, setting theSurround Mode ConfigurationSwitch to Monopole may offerimproved performance. It is alsorecommended that the Monopoleposition be selected if the speak-ers will be mounted close to a cor-ner, as shown in Figure 2.If you are using a receiver/proces-sor with a THX ® surround modeand have selected the THX sur-round mode, it may be beneficialto use the Dipole setting. This is amatter of personal preference andmay change depending on the indi-vidual film soundtrack. It is alsorecommended that the Dipolesetting be used with older record-ings that are only recorded with aDolby ® Pro Logic ® (not the newerDolby Digital) soundtrack.Figures 1 and 2. It does not matter whetherthe tweeter is positioned above orbelow the woofer. This will ensureproper operation and performanceshould the Monopole or Dipoleposition on the surround modeconfiguration switch be selected.Figure 3. The speaker(s)should be mounted on the rearwall facing the listening area,between the side channel speak-ers. If you are using one rearspeaker, it should be mounted asclose as possible to the center ofthe listening area. This allows you to usea single P52OWS for both theleft and right rear speakers in a7-channel system.To use the P52OWS in Application3, follow these simple steps:1. Decide where you want tomount the speaker. Ideally, itshould be mounted in the centerof the rear wall, similar to howit would be mounted in a 6-channel system (Fig. 4).2. Loosen the terminals andremove the strapping bars thatconnect the two sets of termi-nals (Fig. 9).3. To ensure proper left/right con-nections, make sure that thespeaker is in the “upright” posi-tion. The label on the back of thespeaker should be readable, notupside down.4. Connect the speaker wire for theRIGHT REAR speaker to the topset of terminals (Fig. 10).5. Connect the speaker wire for theLEFT REAR speaker to the bot-tom set of terminals (Fig. 10).6. Set the mode configurationswitch to the Bipole position(Fig. 6).Figure 6.
