Page 10 JS Series Sidemount Sand Filters5. If used, pour pea gravel SLOWLY into the filterfirst. Level the surface of the gravel, and thenpour in the appropriate amount of sand to the levelindicated in Table 2. If using sand only, pour it intothe filter SLOWLY to the level indicated in Table2. Be careful not to dislodge the vent tubing fromits fitting in the piping while adding filter media.Refer to Figure 10.6a. For the JS60-SM: Swing the diffuser back so it iscentered with the lid hole in the tank top.6b. For the JS100-SM: Remove the cardboard sanddeflector.7. Wash away any sand or dirt particles in the threadsin the top of the tank.8. Ensure diffuser(s) are upright and centeredproperly.WARNINGThe automatic vent screen and tubingmust be positioned properly to avoidtrapping air inside the filter. Trapped aircan cause product failure or also causethe filter lid to be blown off, which canresult in death, serious personal injury,or property damage.Figure 11. Automatic Vent Positioning9. Make sure that the automatic vent tubing is inplace (threaded through the diffuser) and the ventscreen is installed at the top of the vent tubing. SeeFigure 11.3.6 Use of Zeobrite® as an Alternative toSandAs an alternative filter media for use instead ofsand, Zeobrite has been qualified for use in Jandy JSseries filters.1. For filter sizes of 30" in diameter and greater, it isrecommended that a pea gravel bed be used beforeadding the filter media. See Table 3 for the typeand amount of pea gravel to use. Ensure the topsurface of the pea gravel is flat before adding filtermedia.Using the correct pea gravel will ensure that thefilter media is evenly lifted during backwashingcycles and settles evenly after backwashing tooptimize filter performance. The pea gravel willcover the laterals to approximately 1" above thelaterals.2. Fill the filter with Zeobrite to the level shownin Table 3. The weight of the material shown isapproximate.
