11Speed range handle (I): Selects high or low speedrange. See sect. 4.0 for ranges. Stop spindle beforemoving handle.Spindle must be stoppedbefore attempting to adjust speed rangehandle. Failure to comply may damage speedadjustment mechanism.Downfeed handle (J): Lowers quill/spindle.Engages powerfeed or manual fine feed whenmoved away from head. Can be pushed towardhead to disengage power feed at any time.Downfeed lock knob (K): Tighten to lock outpowerfeed and keep drill in manual feed mode only.Powerfeed scale (L): Graduated in 1/16 inch.Setting locked by screw (L 1 ).Depth stop (M): Can be set for depths up to 6inches (15.24 cm). Handle locks setting.Fine feed handwheel (N): Manually feed spindle infine increments. Clockwise to lower. Scale isgraduated in 0.05 mm.Feed rate lever (O):NOTE: The Electronic Variable Speed unit isdesigned to shut down to prevent harm to thesystem, in the event of overloading the spindle.Make sure speed control knob (G) and speed rangehandle (I) are in matching ranges for the work beingdone. Drilling large holes requires speed rangehandle to be in ‘Low’ mode and speed control knobset to a speed high enough to power the large bit.9.0 OperationRefer to Figures 8-1 and 8-2.9.1 Operating precautionsThe following operating and safety precautions mustbe observed in order to avoid harm to operator ordamage to drill press.1. Head assembly must be locked to column sothe thrust produced by drilling will not force thehead assembly up the column.2. Work table must be locked to column so it willnot be forced down the column.3. Belts should be properly tensioned.4. Do NOT start to drill workpiece until makingcertain workpiece is held down securely.5. Point of operation protection is required formaximum safety. This remains theresponsibility of the user/purchaser sinceconditions differ between jobs.6. Make sure tool is secured in the spindle orchuck before attempting to use the drill press.7. Make sure spindle taper is clean and free ofburrs, scoring, and galling to assure maximumgripping.9.2 Manual drilling1. Set switch (H) to drill mode.2. Loosen handle (L 1 ) on powerfeed hub to allowfull rotation of downfeed handle.3. Use downfeed handle to set end of drill againstsurface of workpiece.4. Loosen handle (M, Figure 8-2) and slideindicator block to zero. Then move indicatorblock to match drilling depth on scale, andtighten handle.5. Start motor and drill hole until travel isrestrained by indicator block.9.3 Manual tapping1. Set switch (H) to tapping mode. Limit switchesare now active.2. Set feed rate lever (O, Figure 8-3) to zero.(NOTE: Feed rate lever must be set to zero orspindle will not turn in manual tap mode.)3. Set depth stop in same manner as above.4. When quill is advanced, upper limit switch willbe released for tapping. When lower limit switchis triggered, spindle will retract and reverserotation for tap withdrawal. When upper limitswitch is again reached, spindle will revert backto forward rotation.NOTE: When tapping switch is off, limit switches aredeactivated and do not affect spindle rotation.9.4 Manual fine feed1. Set switch (H) to drill mode.2. Set depth of cut on powerfeed scale (L) and locksetting (L 1 ).3. Turn on spindle (B).4. Pull downfeed handle (J) away from head.5. Push knob (N 1 ) into handwheel until it engages, and rotate handwheel (N). When set depth isreached, downfeed handle will disengage andspindle will retract.9.5 Powerfeed drillingNOTE: Feed rate lever (O, Figure 8-2) will onlyfunction in drill mode; powerfeed cannot be used intapping mode.1. Set switch (H) to drill mode.2. Set depth stop (M).3. Turn on spindle (B).4. Move feed rate lever (O) to desired setting.
