13Figure 1312.4 AnnealingThe blade must now be annealed, or cooled at acontrolled rate to prevent it becoming too brittle. The general procedure follows. Specific procedurewill depend upon blade type, as described insections 12.4.1 through 12.4.3.1. Turn pressure selector knob all the way to leftso clamp jaws are closest to each other.2. Insert blade into clamps so that weld area iscentered between clamps. Secure blade injaws with the clamp handles.3. Quickly press and release (“jog”) the annealbutton (Figure 13). Repeat jog process untilyou see a slightly red glow from weld area.Do not press and hold theanneal push button. The weld will beoverheated and will fail due to excessiveheat.4. Release both blade clamps, allow blade tocool, then remove blade from clamps.5. Check weld integrity. Bend blade to form aradius at point of weld. The size of the radiusshould be approximately the same as radius ofband saw drive wheel. The weld must hold andnot break or crack after forming the radius. Ifthe weld breaks, cut away welded area andrepeat welding-annealing process.6. Check to make sure welded section is samethickness as rest of blade. If not, grind offexcess weld material using the grinder. Referto section 12.5, Blade grinding. If blade is thicker at the weldthan at the rest of the blade, using the blademay damage the guides. The following are variations of the generalprocedure, based upon blade type:12.4.1 Carbon steel blades1. Press and jog the annealing switch button untilweld is a "dull cherry" to "cherry red" color.2. Allow blade to cool slowly by decreasingjogging frequency.12.4.2 Carbon steel hard back blades1. Heat blade slowly until weld becomes a deepblue color.2. Continue to heat by jogging the anneal buttonuntil the width of the blue color is one-half thelength of the band exposed between the jaws.3. Do not overheat or the temper of the band willbe damaged. Caution - Do not heat beyondthe "blue" stage. If the band begins to showany red color, it is too hot. Cool quickly byreleasing the anneal button.Figure 1412.4.3 Bi-Metal blades1. Heat blade slowly by jogging the annealingswitch button until weld just begins to emit light(dull red color). The desired color may notalways be visible in normal room light - alwaysshade the weld area with your hand.2. Cool the weld quickly by releasing theannealing button.3. Follow this procedure before and after grindingbimetal blades.
