162SUPPLEMENTARYHEATER(where provided)The supplementary heater canwork with the engine off or on and itallows the following:– to heat the engine coolant beforestart up– to reduce the engine warming uptime after cold starting– to warm up the passenger com-partment before departure– to remove ice or condensate fromthe windows.Using the heater in winter has thefollowing advantages:– to reduce engine wear– to reduce polluting emissions– to improve comfort during dri-ving and stops– to improve safety.The supplementary heater functionis useful to integrate the enginecoolant warming up during drivingin order to reach and keep the opti-mal working temperature of the pas-senger compartment heater in thequickest way, especially if the cli-mate is extremely cold.The system is composed of:– a heating unit– an electric pump for the enginecoolant circulation– an exhaust pipe with muffler– an electric pump metering thefuels– a fuel delivery pipe– a sensor for outside air tempera-ture.The system is connected to the carthrough the engine cooling system,the fuel system and the electric sys-tem. The coolant coming out fromthe engine is conveyed to the heaterand made flow in the circuit by anelectric pump. The heater burner issupplied with the car fuel takendirectly from the tank by means ofan electric pulse pump and thenconveyed to the appropriate systempipe. The heater control unit sup-plies directly both electric pumps(fuel and coolant), activates andchecks the heater functions.The supplementary heating systemworks both with the engine runningand the engine stationary. These twoconditions determine the type of sys-tem operating mode:– when the engine is stationary thesupplementary heater can work in“programmable heater” or “parked-car heater” mode;
