When you need to remove more than the amountspecified in the table mentioned in the “Adjustingdepth of cut” section, set the depth of cut shal-lower than the amount and make two or morepasses.Stopper► Fig.7: 1. Stopper 2. Stopper button 3. Stopper knob4. Table topUse the stopper when you need to plane many work-pieces to the same thickness. To do so, proceed asfollows.1. Turn the crank handle until the indicator platepoints to the scale graduation indicating thedesired finished dimension.2. Depress the stopper button and lower the stopperuntil it just contacts the table top.3. If you need fine adjustment of the stopper, turn thestopper knob.CAUTION:• When the stopper is not in use, always raise itto the topmost position. Never force the crankhandle when the stopper is in contact with thetable top. This may cause tool damage.ASSEMBLYCAUTION:• Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before carrying out any work on thetool.Replacing planer bladesCAUTION:• Handle the blades very carefully when removingor installing the blades to prevent cuts or injuryfrom the blades and to prevent damage to theblades. They are razor-sharp.• Clean out all chips, dust, pitch or foreign matteradhering to the drum or blades before installingthe blades.• Use blades of the same dimensions and weight, or drum oscillation/vibration will result, caus-ing poor cutting action and eventually, toolbreakdown.• Replace both blades at the same time.• The disposable-type blade has a cutting edgeon both sides. When one cutting edge becomesdull, you can use the other cutting edge. Alwaysremove resin and dirt sticking to the reverseside of the blade before using the other cuttingedge. This blade must not be re-sharpened.When both cutting edges become dull, the bladeshould be carefully thrown away.Removing bladesLoosen the thumb screw which secures the chip coverand remove the chip cover. Remove the screws whichsecure the right side cover. Then remove the right sidecover. Turn the pulley until the drum can be locked inthe position whereby the blade installation bolts faceupward.► Fig.8: 1. Lock plate 2. Drum 3. Thumb screw4. PulleyFor throw away blades onlyPlace the two magnetic holders on the set plate andpush them in the direction of the arrow until the clawcontact the blade. Remove the six blade installationbolts using the socket wrench. Grip the magnetic hold-ers and raise them straight up to remove the set plateand the blade from the drum. Press the lock plate andturn the pulley 180° to lock the drum. Remove the otherblade as described above.► Fig.9: 1. Blade installation bolts 2. Set plate3. Magnetic holder 4. Drum 5. Blade 6. Raise the set plate and blade straight up toremove them from the drum. Press the lock plate androtate the drum by turning the pulley 180° to lock thedrum. Set plateInstalling bladesCAUTION:• Use only Makita socket wrench provided totighten the blade installation bolts. The useof any other socket wrench may cause over-tightening or insufficient tightening of the bolts,resulting in severe injury.For throw away blades onlyProvide a flat wood block approximately 300 mm longand 100 mm wide. Place the blade and the set plateon the wood block so that the blade locating lug of theset plate rests in the groove of the blade. Adjust the setplate so that both ends of the blade protrude approxi-mately 1 mm beyond the end of the set plate. Place thetwo magnetic holders on the set plate and push themuntil the claw contacts the blade.► Fig.13: 1. Magnetic holder 2. Set plate 3. BladeGrip the magnetic holder and slip the heel of the setplate into the groove in the drum. Install the blade instal-lation bolts.► Fig.14: 1. Blade installation bolts 2. Set plate3. Magnetic holder 4. Drum 5. Blade 6. ClawAfter tightening all the blade installation bolts lightlyand evenly from the center to the outside, tighten themcompletely following the same sequence.
