20Securing workpieceWARNING:• It is extremely important to always secure theworkpiece correctly with the proper type of vise orcrown molding stoppers. Failure to do so may resultin serious personal injury and cause damage to the tooland/or the workpiece.• After a cutting operation do not raise the blade untilit has come to a complete stop. The raising of acoasting blade may result in serious personal injuryand damage to the workpiece.• When cutting a workpiece that is longer than thesupport base of the saw, the material should besupported the entire length beyond the supportbase and at the same height to keep the materiallevel. Proper workpiece support will help avoid bladepinch and possible kickback which may result inserious personal injury. Do not rely solely on thevertical vise and/or horizontal vise to secure theworkpiece. Thin material tends to sag. Supportworkpiece over its entire length to avoid blade pinchand possible KICKBACK. (Fig. 36)Guide fence (SLIDING FENCES which areupper and lower fences) adjustmentWARNING:• Before operating the tool, make sure that the upper andlower fences are secured firmly.• Before bevel-cutting, make sure that no part of thetool, especially the blade, contacts the upper andlower fences when fully lowering and raising thehandle in any position and while moving thecarriage through its full range of travel. If the tool orblade makes contact with the fence this may result inkickback or unexpected movement of the material andserious personal injury. The lower fences can be moved inward and outward byloosening the clamping screws. (Fig. 37)A red indicating area will appear as the lower fences aremoved inward and will disappear as the lower fences aremoved outward. (Fig. 38)The upper fences can be removed or moved inward andoutward by loosening the levers. (Fig. 39)In case of bevel-cutting, adjust the lower and upper fencepositions to be as close to the blade as practical toprovide maximum workpiece support, and make sure thatno part of the tool, especially the blade, contacts the lowerand upper fences when lowering and raising the handlefully at any position and pulling or pushing the carriage allthe way at the lowest position. Before cutting operations, make a dry run with the sawturned off and unplugged, then check clearance betweenfences and moving parts. Before cutting operations, firmly secure lower fences bytightening the clamping screws and upper fences bytightening the levers. When bevel-cutting operations are complete, don’t forgetto return the upper fences to the original position andreturn it.Vertical vise (Fig. 40)The vertical vise can be installed in two positions on eitherthe left or right side of the base. Insert the vise rod into thehole in the base.Position the vise arm according to the thickness andshape of the workpiece and secure the vise arm bytightening the screw. If the screw to secure the vise armcontacts the carriage, install the screw on the oppositeside of vise arm. Make sure that no part of the toolcontacts the vise when lowering the handle fully andpulling or pushing the carriage all the way. If some partcontacts the vise, re-position the vise.Press the workpiece flat against the guide fence and theturn base. Position the workpiece at the desired cuttingposition and secure it firmly by tightening the vise knob.Turning the vise knob to 90° counterclockwise allows thevise knob to be moved up and down, facilitating the quicksetting of workpiece. To secure the workpiece aftersetting, turn the vise knob clockwise.WARNING:• The workpiece must be secured firmly against theturn base and guide fence with the vise during alloperations. If the workpiece is not properly securedagainst the fence the material may move during thecutting operation causing possible damage to theblade, causing the material to be thrown and loss ofcontrol resulting in serious personal injury.Horizontal vise (optional accessory)(Fig. 41)The horizontal vise can be installed in two positions oneither the left or right side of the base. (Fig. 42)When performing 15° or greater miter cuts, install thehorizontal vise on the side opposite the direction in whichthe turn base is to be turned.By flipping the vise nut counterclockwise, the vise isreleased, and rapidly moves in and out. To grip theworkpiece, push the vise knob forward until the vise platecontacts the workpiece and flip the vise nut clockwise. Then turn the vise knob clockwise to secure theworkpiece. The maximum width of workpiece which can be securedby the horizontal vise is 215 mm.WARNING:• Always rotate the vise nut clockwise until theworkpiece is properly secured. If the workpiece isnot properly secured the material may move during thecutting operation causing possible damage to theblade, causing the material to be thrown and loss ofcontrol resulting in serious personal injury.• When cutting a thin workpiece, such as base boards, against the fence, always use the horizontal vise.Holders (Optional accessory) (Fig. 43)The holders can be installed on either side as aconvenient means of holding workpieces horizontally. Slipthe holder rods into the holes in the base and adjust theirlength according to the workpiece to be held. Then tightenthe holders securely with the screws.WARNING:• Always support a long workpiece so it is level withthe top surface of the turn base for an accurate cut |
