An exposedblade as a result of defeated guarding may resultin serious personal injury during operation.In the interest of your personal safety, always maintain theblade guard in good condition. Any irregular operation of theblade guard should be corrected immediately. Check to assurespring loaded return action of guard.WARNING:• Never use the tool if the blade guard or springare damaged, faulty or removed. Operation ofthe tool with a damaged, faulty or removed guardmay result in serious personal injury.If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty, or sawdustadheres to it in such a way that the blade and/or workpiece isno longer easily visible, unplug the saw and clean the guardcarefully with a damp cloth. Do not use solvents or anypetroleum-based cleaners on the plastic guard because thismay cause damage to the guard.If the blade guard becomes dirty and needs to becleaned for proper operation follow the steps below:With the tool switched off and unplugged, use the suppliedsocket wrench to loosen the hex bolt holding the center cover.Loosen the hex bolt by turning it counterclockwise and raise theblade guard and center cover.Fig.4With the blade guard so positioned, cleaning can bemore completely and efficiently accomplished. Whencleaning is complete reverse procedure above andsecure bolt. Do not remove spring holding blade guard.If guard becomes damaged through age or UV lightexposure, contact a Makita service center for a newguard. DO NOT DEFEAT OR REMOVE GUARD.Positioning kerf boardFig.5Fig.6This tool is provided with the kerf boards in the turn base tominimize tearing on the exit side of a cut. The kerf boards arefactory adjusted so that the saw blade does not contact the kerfboards. Before use, adjust the kerf boards as follows:Fig.7First, unplug the tool. Loosen all the screws (2 each on leftand right) securing the kerf boards. Re-tighten them only tothe extent that the kerf boards can still be easily moved byhand. Lower the handle fully and push in the stopper pin tolock the handle in the lowered position. Loosen the lockingscrew counterclockwise which secures the upper slide polesand also push forward the lock lever which secures the lowerslide poles. Pull the carriage toward you fully. Adjust the kerfboards so that the kerf boards just contact the sides of theblade teeth. Tighten the front screws (do not tighten firmly).Push the carriage toward the guide fence fully and adjust thekerf boards so that the kerf boards just contact the sides ofblade teeth. Tighten the rear screws (do not tighten firmly).After adjusting the kerf boards, release the stopper pin andraise the handle. Then tighten all the screws securely.NOTICE:• After setting the bevel angle ensure that the kerfboards are adjusted properly. Correct adjustment ofthe kerf boards will help provide proper support of theworkpiece minimizing workpiece tear out.Maintaining maximum cutting capacityThis tool is factory adjusted to provide the maximumcutting capacity for a 260 mm saw blade.Unplug the tool before any adjustment is attempted. Wheninstalling a new blade, always check the lower limit position ofthe blade and if necessary, adjust it as follows:1234009518Fig.8Fig.9First, unplug the tool. Lower the stopper lever to position thesaw blade as shown in the figure. Push the carriage towardthe guide fence fully and lower the handle completely. Usethe socket wrench to turn the adjusting bolt until the peripheryof the blade extends slightly below the top surface of the turnbase at the point where the front face of the guide fencemeets the top surface of the turn base.With the tool unplugged, rotate the blade by hand whileholding the handle all the way down to be sure that theblade does not contact any part of the lower base.Re-adjust slightly, if necessary.1.
