18 ENGLISHFUNCTIONALDESCRIPTIONWARNING: Always be sure that the tool isswitched off and unplugged before adjusting orchecking function on the tool. Failure to switch offand unplug the tool may result in serious personalinjury from accidental start-up.Blade guard► Fig.8: 1. Blade guardWhen lowering the handle, the blade guard rises auto-matically. The guard is spring loaded so it returns toits original position when the cut is completed and thehandle is raised.WARNING: Never defeat or remove the bladeguard or the spring which attaches to the guard.An exposed blade as a result of defeated guardingmay result in serious personal injury during operation.In the interest of your personal safety, always maintainthe blade guard in good condition. Any irregular opera-tion of the blade guard should be corrected immediately.Check to assure spring loaded return action of guard.WARNING: Never use the tool if the bladeguard or spring are damaged, faulty or removed.Operation of the tool with a damaged, faulty orremoved guard may result in serious personal injury.If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty, or saw-dust adheres to it in such a way that the blade and/orworkpiece is no longer easily visible, unplug the saw andclean the guard carefully with a damp cloth. Do not usesolvents or any petroleum-based cleaners on the plasticguard because this may cause damage to the guard.If the blade guard is especially dirty and vision throughthe guard is impaired, unplug the tool and use the sup-plied wrench to loosen the hex bolt holding the centercover. Loosen the hex bolt by turning it counterclock-wise and raise the blade guard and center cover. Withthe blade guard so positioned, cleaning can be morecompletely and efficiently accomplished. When cleaningis complete, reverse procedure above and secure bolt.Do not remove spring holding blade guard. If guardbecomes discolored through age or UV light exposure,contact a Makita service center for a new guard. DONOT DEFEAT OR REMOVE GUARD.► Fig.9: 1. Center cover 2. Hex wrench 3. BladeguardKerf boardsThis tool is provided with the kerf boards in the turnbase to minimize tearing on the exit side of a cut. Thekerf boards are factory adjusted so that the saw bladedoes not contact the kerf boards. Before use, adjust thekerf boards as follows:► Fig.10: 1. Kerf board► Fig.11: 1. Left bevel cut 2. Straight cut 3. Rightbevel cut 4. Saw blade 5. Blade teeth6. Kerf boardFirst, unplug the tool. Loosen all the screws (2 eachon left and right) securing the kerf boards until the kerfboards can still be easily moved by hand. Lower thehandle fully, then pull and turn the stopper pin to lockthe handle in the lowered position. Release the stopperpin on the sliding pole and pull the carriage toward youfully. Adjust the kerf boards so that the kerf boards justcontact the sides of the blade teeth. Tighten the frontscrews (do not tighten firmly). Push the carriage towardthe guide fence fully and adjust the kerf boards so thatthe kerf boards just contact the sides of blade teeth.Tighten the rear screws (do not tighten firmly).After adjusting the kerf boards, release the stopperpin and raise the handle. Then tighten all the screwssecurely.NOTICE: After setting the bevel angle ensurethat the kerf boards are adjusted properly. Correctadjustment of the kerf boards will help provide propersupport of the workpiece minimizing workpiece tearout.Maintaining maximum cuttingcapacityThis tool is factory adjusted to provide the maximumcutting capacity for 255 mm or 260 mm saw blade.When installing a new blade, always check the lowerlimit position of the blade and if necessary, adjust it asfollows:First, unplug the tool. Turn the stopper lever to engagedposition.► Fig.12: 1. Stopper leverPush the carriage toward the guide fence fully andlower the handle completely.Adjust the blade position by turning the adjusting boltwith the hex wrench. The periphery of the blade shouldextend slightly below the top surface of the turn baseand also comes to the point where the front face of theguide fence meets the top surface of the turn base.► Fig.13: 1. Guide fenceWith the tool unplugged, rotate the blade by hand whileholding the handle all the way down to be sure thatthe blade does not contact any part of the lower base.Re-adjust slightly, if necessary.After adjustment, always return the stopper lever to theoriginal position.WARNING: After installing a new blade andwith the tool unplugged, always be sure that theblade does not contact any part of the lower basewhen the handle is lowered completely. If a blademakes contact with the base it may cause kickbackand result in serious personal injury.Stopper armThe lower limit position of the blade can be easilyadjusted with the stopper arm. To adjust it, turn thestopper arm in the direction of the arrow as shown in thefigure. Turn the adjusting screw so that the blade stopsat the desired position when lowering the handle fully.► Fig.15: 1. Stopper arm 2. Adjusting screw |
