53Section 7 Refrigeration SystemREFRIGERANT RE-USE POLICYManitowoc recognizes and supports the need forproper handling, re-use, and disposal of, CFC andHCFC refrigerants. Manitowoc service proceduresrequire recapturing refrigerants, not venting them tothe atmosphere.It is not necessary, in or out of warranty, to reduceor compromise the quality and reliability of yourcustomers’ products to achieve this.ImportantManitowoc Ice, Inc. assumes no responsibility foruse of contaminated refrigerant. Damageresulting from the use of contaminated,recovered, or recycled refrigerant is the soleresponsibility of the servicing company.Manitowoc approves the use of:1. New Refrigerant• Must be of original nameplate type.2. Reclaimed Refrigerant• Must be of original nameplate type.• Must meet ARI Standard 700 (latest edition)specifications.3. Recovered or Recycled Refrigerant• Must be recovered or recycled in accordancewith current local, state and federal laws.• Must be recovered from and re-used in thesame Manitowoc product. Re-use ofrecovered or recycled refrigerant from otherproducts is not approved.• Recycling equipment must be certified toARI Standard 740 (latest edition) and bemaintained to consistently meet thisstandard.• Recovered refrigerant must come from a“contaminant-free” system. To decidewhether the system is contaminant free,consider:• Type(s) of previous failure(s)• Whether the system was cleaned,evacuated and recharged properlyfollowing failure(s)• Whether the system has beencontaminated by this failure• Compressor motor burnouts andimproper past service prevent refrigerantre-use.• Refer to “System ContaminationCleanup” to test for contamination.4. “Substitute” or “Alternative” Refrigerant• Must use only Manitowoc-approvedalternative refrigerants.• Must follow Manitowoc-publishedconversion procedures.
