Please read allinstructions fully.LANGUAGEDEUTSCHENGLISHFRANÇAISSETDEFJ1 Insert an EN-4 battery packTurn the camera off before insert-ing the battery pack. To insert,turn the battery pack latch to theopen position, slide the batterypack into the camera, and lock itin place. Turn the camera on andcheck the battery indicator in thecontrol panel on top of the cam-era.2 Attach a lensTurn the camera off and mount alens on the camera as shownabove. Set aperture to its mini-mum setting (largest f-number)and lock the aperture ring.Use a D-Type AF Nikkor lens witha built-in CPU to take full advan-tage of camera features.3 Reset settings to defaultsWhen using the camera for the firsttime, you may want to clear chang-es to settings made by previoususers. After turning the camera on,hold the and buttons downtogether for more than two secondsto restore camera settings to theirdefault values. The CUSTOM indi-cator in the rear control panel willstart to blink. To clear changes tocustom settings, release both but-tons while the indicator is blinkingand then press the buttons again.4 Choose a language for the menusTo choose a language for theplayback mode menus, hold downthe mode-dial lock release andturn the mode dial to PLAY. Pressthe button to display theplayback menu. Using the focus-area selector, select LANGUAGEfrom the SET UP sub-menu.Highlight a language in the LAN-GUAGE menu (above) and pressthe selector to the right to put yourchoice into effect.5 Adjust viewfinder diopterThe D1 is equipped with diopteradjustment to accommodateindividual differences in vision. Toadjust viewfinder diopter, pull thediopter knob out and rotate it untilthe focus brackets in the viewfind-er are in sharp focus.16 Frame a photographAfter framing a photograph, pressthe shutter-release button half waydown and confirm that the in-focusindicator () appears in the view-finder.14 Choose matrix meteringHold down the metering selectorlock release and turn the meteringselector to (matrix metering).The matrix metering indicator willappear in the viewfinder when theshutter-release button is pressedhalf way.17 Take a picturePress the shutter-release buttonthe rest of the way down to take apicture. The green access lampon the card-slot cover will blinkwhile the photograph is recordedto the memory card. Do not turnthe camera off or remove thememory card until the accesslamp has turned off.15 Set the exposure mode toHold the MODE button down andturn the main command dial untilthe exposure-mode indicator inthe control panel on top of thecamera shows (programmedauto).9 Set sensitivity to 200Camera sensitivity (ISO equiva-lency) can be set to 200, 400, 800,or 1600 (ISO equivalent ). Tochoose a sensitivity of 200, holdthe button down and turn themain command dial. The sensitivi-ty setting will be displayed in therear control panel.8 Set image quality to NORMALAfter turning the camera on, holdthe button down and turn themain command dial until NORM(normal) appears in the rear con-trol panel.10Set white balance to auto (A)Holding the button down, turnthe main command dial until A(auto white balance) appears inthe rear control panel.13Select the center focus areaUnlock the focus-area selector (A)and press the arrows until thecenter focus area is selected inthe viewfinder and the controlpanel on top of the camera (B).Return the focus-area selectorlock to the locked position.A7 Select single-frame shootingThe D1 offers a choice of continu-ous and single-frame shooting. Toselect single-frame shooting, holddown the mode-dial lock releaseand turn the mode dial to S.A B6 Insert a memory cardThe D1 uses CompactFlash mem-ory cards to store photographs(think of it as electronic film). Afterturning the camera off, open thedoor covering the card-slot coverrelease button (A1) and press thecard-slot cover release button (A2)to open the card slot (A3). In thismode, the camera will focus auto-matically when the shutter-releasebutton is pressed half way. Theshutter can only be released whenthe camera is in focus. “Camera Settings: Autofocus”12Set the AF area modeHolding down the AF area modebutton [+], rotate the main com-mand dial until [ ] (single area AF)appears in the control panel ontop of the camera. “Camera Settings: AF Area Mode”Focus AreaThe D1 offers a choice of five focus areas, whichtogether cover a wide portion of the frame.Unlock the focus-area selector and press thearrows until the desired focus area is highlightedin red in the viewfinder. By choosing focus areaaccording to the position of your main subject inthe composition, you can focus on an off-centersubject without using focus lock (see below). “Camera Settings: Focus Area”Focus LockUse focus lock when your subject will not be in one of the five focusareas in the final composition.1Position the subject in theactive focus area and lightlypress the shutter-releasebutton to confirm focus. Incontinuous servo AF, pressthe AF/AE lock button.2Keeping AE/AF lock buttonheld down or the shutter-release button slightly de-pressed, re-compose yourphotograph, then press theshutter-release button therest of the way down to takea photograph. “Camera Settings: Focus Lock”Single-Frame PlaybackPhotographs taken with the D1 can be played back instantly on theLCD monitor for review or deletion.1 Turn the monitor onPress the button to turn the monitor on. The most recentphotograph will be displayed.2 View additional photosPress the focus-area selector down to view the other photo-graphs in memory one at a time, or keep the selector pressedto scroll rapidly through memory until you reach the desiredframe number. Press the selector to the right to view photoinformation for the photograph currently displayed.3 Deleting photographsTo delete the photograph displayed in the LCD monitor, pressthe button. The confirmation dialog shown above at rightwill appear. Press the button again to delete the photo-graph. To return to playback mode without deleting the photo-graph, press any button on the rear of the camera other thanthe and buttons.
