15HOW TO PUT ON THE HEART RATE MONITORThe heart rate monitor has two components: a cheststrap and a sensor unit (see the drawing below). Insertthe tab on one end of the chest strap into one end ofthe sensor unit, as shown in the inset drawing. Pressthe end of the sensor unit under the buckle on thechest strap. The tab should be flush with the front ofthe sensor unit.Next, wrap the heartrate monitor aroundyour chest and attachthe other end of thechest strap to the sen-sor unit. Adjust thelength of the cheststrap, if necessary. The heart rate monitor should be under your clothes, tight against your skin, and as high under the pectoralmuscles or breasts as is comfortable. Make sure thatthe logo on the sensor unit is facing forward and isright-side-up.Pull the sensor unit away from your body a few inchesand locate the two electrode areas on the inner side(the electrode areas are covered by shallow ridges).Using saline solution such as saliva or contact lenssolution, wet both electrode areas. Return the sensorunit to a position against your chest.CARE AND MAINTENANCE• Dry the heart rate monitor after each use. The heartrate monitor is activated when you wet the electrodeareas and put on the heart rate monitor; the heartrate monitor shuts off when it is removed and theelectrode areas are dried. If the heart rate monitor isnot dried after each use, the battery may be drainedprematurely.• Store the heart rate monitor in a warm, dry place. Donot store the heart rate monitor in a plastic bag orother container that may trap moisture.• Do not expose the heart rate monitor to direct sun-light for extended periods of time or to temperaturesabove 122° F (50° C) or below 14° F (-10° C).• Do not excessively bend or stretch the sensor unitwhen using or storing the heart rate monitor.• Clean the sensor unit using a damp cloth—never usealcohol, abrasives, or chemicals. Hand wash and airdry the heart rate monitor.TROUBLESHOOTINGIf the heart rate monitor does not function properly, trythe suggestions below.• Make sure that you are wearing the heart ratemonitor as described at the left. Note: If the heartrate monitor does not function when positioned asdescribed, move it slightly lower or higher on yourchest.• Use saline solution such as saliva or contact lenssolution to wet the two electrode areas on the sensorunit. If heart rate readings do not appear until youbegin perspiring, re-wet the electrode areas.• Position yourself near the console. For the consoleto display heart rate readings, the user must bewithin arm’s length of the console.• The heart rate monitor is designed to work withpeople who have normal heart rhythms. Heart ratereading problems may be caused by medical condi-tions such as premature ventricular contractions(pvcs), tachycardia bursts, and arrhythmia.• The operation of the heart rate monitor can beaffected by magnetic interference caused by highpower lines or other sources. If it is suspected thatthis is a problem, try relocating the elliptical.HOW TO USE THE HEART RATE MONITORChest StrapSensor UnitTabBuckleSensorUnitLogo
