9STARTING - ELECTRIC1. Disconnect all loads to generator.2. Turn gas line valve to ON position.3. For cold engine, move choke lever to full chokeposition, for warm engine, move choke lever to half chokeor to RUN position.4. Turn key to start position.5. When engine starts, move choke lever to RUNposition.6. Loads may now be connected to generator.STOPPING1. Disconnect all loads to generator.2. Place key to the OFF position.3. Turn gas line valve to OFF position.ENGINE CARERefer to your Honda Owner’s Manual for proper careand maintenance.NOTE: When changing the oil on a hot engine, the oilmight overshoot the oil drain hole on the generator base.Use a deflector (piece of cardboard or paper) to direct theoil down the hole.GENERATOR CAREThe generator head is a two pole, 3600 RPM, 60 Hz,brushless, revolving field and synchronous type with onesealed ball bearing. The rotor of the generator head isdirectly connected to the engine crank shaft and the statoris rigidly coupled to the engine casting via the generatorhead casting.Exercising The Generator - The generator shouldbe operated every four w eeks. This is accomplished bystarting the engine and applying a load for 10 to 15minutes. This will dry out any moisture that hasaccumulated in the windings. If left, this moisture cancause corrosion in the winding. Frequent operation of theengine generator will also ensure that the set is operatingproperly should it be needed in an emergency.Generator Maintenance - The generator head isbrushless and maintenance free. Any major generatorservice including the installation or replacement of partsshould be performed only by a qualified electrical servicetechnician. USE ONLY NORTHSTAR APPROVEDREPAIR PARTS AVAILABLE AT 1-800-270-0810.A. Bearing - The bearing used in these generators is aheavy duty sealed ball bearing. They require nomaintenance or lubrication.B. Receptacles - Quality receptacles have beenutilized. If a receptacle should become cracked orotherwise damaged, replace it. Using cracked ordamaged receptacles can be both dangerous to theoperator and destructive to the equipment.WARNING, Stand-by OperationIf your generator is to be used as a standby electricpower source in case of utility failure, it must be installedby a registered and licensed electrician and in compliancewith all applicable state and local electrical codes. Also, local Fire Departments must be consulted concerningproper and safe handling procedures for gasoline. NEVERconnect any generator to any existing electrical systemwithout an isolating, UL approved transfer switch, installedby a licensed electrician.
