Printing from Windows> 26PRINTING FROM W INDOWSYour printer’s menus provide access to many options. See “Usingthe printer software” on page 83 for more information. The Windows printer driver also contains settings for many ofthese items. Where items in the printer driver are the same asthose in the menus, and you print documents from Windows, thesettings in the Windows printer driver will override those items inthe menus. The illustrations in this chapter show the C3400n printer inWindows XP/2000. However, the options shown for the C3400nare the same when using the C3300 model. Other Windowsversions may appear slightly different, but the principles are thesame.PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGSA printer driver is a software program that controls a printer. Theprinter driver feeds data about printing requirements for adocument to the printer. You can make printer driver settings either from WindowsPrinters window (called “Printers and Faxes” in Windows XP) orfrom within a Windows application. The driver settings you makefrom the Windows “Printing Preferences” dialog box areessentially default settings and will be remembered from oneWindows session to the next. The driver settings you make fromwithin a Windows application, e.g. in the File -> Print dialog boxin Microsoft Word, are those required for a particular job and willnot be remembered the next time you open this application. Inboth cases, you can save and name (on the Setup tab) specificsets of driver settings which can be recalled for future use.
