62EN2 Focusing and shooting functions• Super FP flashSuper FP flash is available with the FL-50R or FL-36R. You can use the Super FP flasheven where normal flashes cannot be used with high shutter speed. Fill-in flash shootingwith the aperture open (such as in outdoor portrait shooting) is also possible with Super FPflash. For details, refer to the external flash’s manual.Flash mode settingThe camera sets the flash mode according to various factors such as firing pattern and flashtiming. Available flash modes depend on the exposure mode.Auto flash AUTOThe flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions. To shoot a subject with backlighting, position the AF target over the subject.• Flash synchronization speed/Slow limitShutter speed can be changed when the flash fires. g“#X-SYNC.” (P. 104), “#SLOWLIMIT” (P. 104)Red-eye reduction flash !/HIn the red-eye reduction flash mode, a series of pre-flashes are emitted just before theregular flash fires. This helps accustom the subject’s eyes to the bright light and minimizesthe red-eye phenomenon. In S/M mode, the flash always fires.x Notes• After the pre-flashes, it takes about 1 second before the shutter is released. Hold the camerafirmly to avoid camera shake.• Effectiveness may be limited if the subject is not looking directly at pre-flashes, or if theshooting range is too far. Individual physical characteristics may also limit effectiveness.Slow synchronization (1st curtain) #SLOWThe slow synchronization flash is designed for slow shutter speeds. Normally, when shootingwith a flash, shutter speeds cannot go below a certain level to prevent camera shake. Butwhen shooting a subject against a night scene, fast shutter speeds can make the backgroundtoo dark. Slow synchronization allows you to capture both the background and the subject.Since the shutter speed is slow, be sure to stabilize the camera by using a tripod so as not tocause the picture to be blurred.Slow synchronization (2nd curtain) #SLOW2/2nd CURTAINUsually, the flash fires the moment (immediately after) the shutter opens (1st curtain). In thismode, however, the flash fires immediately before the shutter closes. 2nd curtain flash firesjust before the shutter closes. Changing the flash timing can create interesting effects in yourpicture, such as expressing the movement of a car by showing the tail-lights streamingbackwards. The slower the shutter speed, the better the effects turn out. In S/M mode, theflash always fires.Slow synchronization (1st curtain)/Red-eye reduction flash !SLOWWhile using slow synchronization with flash shooting, you can also use this function toachieve red-eye reduction.
