Usage PrecautionsPlease read these precautions before operating this VTR.Avoid Sudden Changes in TemperatureIf the VTR is suddenly moved from a cold place to a warmplace, condensation may form on the tape and inside theVTR. In this case, the “cl” dew indicator will flash on and offand the VTR will not operate.Dew May Form in the VTR if:• The VTR is in a room where the heater has just beenturned on.• The VTR is in a room with steam or high humidity.• The VTR is brought from cold surroundings into a heatedroom.• The VTR is suddenly brought from cool surroundings,such as an air-conditioned room or car, to a place whichis hot and humid.When dew forms in the VTR, the “rf” dew indicator on thedisplay flashes on and off (The self test indicator “U10” willalso appear in the VTR display.) and all the function buttonsare made non-operational to protect the tape and the videoheads. When the dew indicator flashes, wait until thisindicator disappears.• If dew forms inside the VTR while the VTR is off, it willturn on automatically and the dew indicator will flash onand off. As soon as the dew disappears, the VTR will turnitself off again.Note:Do not operate the VTR for at least 1 hour if any of theabove conditions occur.Video Head Clogging and RemedyWhen the video heads (which contact the tape) are dirty,the playback picture contains mosaic-like patterns or thewhole screen becomes black. If they become even moredirty, the recording performance deteriorates and in theworst case, recording may not be possible at all.Causes of Dirty Video Heads• A lot of dust in the air• High-temperature and high-humidity environment• Damaged tape• Long-time useUsing the Mini-DV Format Digital Video HeadCleaner:1. Insert the Head Cleaner into the VTR in the sameway as a video cassette.2. Press PLAY (►), and after apporoximately20 seconds press STOP (■). (Do not rewind thetape.)3. Take out the Head Cleaner. Insert a videocassette, perform recording and then play it backto check the picture.4. If the picture is still not clear, repeat aboveoperation steps 1 -3. (Do not use the HeadCleaner more than 3 times in succession.)Notes:• Do not rewind the tape in the Head Cleaner afterevery use. Rewind it only after the tape hasreached its end, and then use it again in the sameway from the beginning.• If the video heads again become clogged with dirtsoon after cleaning, this might be caused by adamaged tape. In this case, stop using thatcassette immediately.• Be careful not to clean the video heads too much.(Too much cleaning could cause excessive wear tothe video heads. If the video heads get worn, thepicture is not played back clearly even aftercleaning.)• If using the Head Cleaner does not clear the videohead clogging, the VTR requires cleaning orrepairing by a service center.
