Answering System40Turning on the answeringsystem remotelyIf the answering system is off, you canturn it on remotely.1 Dial your phone number from atouch-tone phone.2 Let the phone ring 9 times.L A long beep is heard.3 Enter your remote access codewithin 10 seconds after the longbeep.L The greeting message is playedback.L You can either hang up, or enteryour remote access code againand begin remote operation (page39).Skipping the greetingmessage to leave a messageYou can leave a message just as anyoutside caller can. Call your phonenumber from a touch-tone phone. Whenthe answering system picks up, press{*} to skip the greeting message andrecord your message after the beep.Answering systemsettingsIf the base unit is reset to its defaultsettings (page 27), the followinganswering system-related settings willbe reset.*1 Call screening can be set for eachhandset.*2 This setting will be retained when thebase unit is reset.Number of rings before theunit answers a callYou can change the number of times thephone rings “Number of Rings”before the unit answers a call. You canselect 2 to 6 rings, or “Auto”.“Auto”: The unit’s answering systemanswers at the end of the 2nd ring whennew messages have been recorded, orat the end of the 5th ring when there areno new messages. If you call your phonefrom outside to listen to new messages(page 39), you know that there are nonew messages when the phone rings forthe 3rd time.
