8Underneath the classically British exterior beats anaudiophile heart. The long-throw KEVLAR driver ismanufactured from a self-damping resin impregnatedfibre form of the material. This is then lattice woven tocreate the appropriate stiffness, strength and weightproperties. The material is formed into a cone andmounted on a butyl rubber surround. A high efficiency, double hand-wound voice coil tracks the signal, with thehigh-gauss magnet assembly providing an impetus formovement. A strong, die-cast aluminium alloy chassisassembly is an essential part of the design, keepingeverything taut and under control, even with largetransients and extremes of power. A profiled phase plugprovides additional cone axial rigidity and also improvesoff-axis performance. The dual 25mm voice coil is wound on an aluminiumalloy carrier or ‘bobbin’. This ‘wicks’ heat away from thecentral coil region to maintain peak performance andthe optimum excursion of the long-throw driver. Thecoils are vented to reduce the effect of any pressurebuild-up in the central cone region. Many years of experience have manifested themselves inthe high-frequency driver. A compact yet powerfulneodymium magnet keeps the tightest control on thediaphragm. Phase coherency is particularly important toensure the bass integrates perfectly with the treble, andof course, to create a truly holographic stereo image –the hallmark of a classic Quad sound. This tweeter is socontrolled; it measures typically less than 1% distortionfrom 103dB (equivalent to normally loud playback)output at a distance of 1 metre. The tweeter fascia plate is engineered for a smoothfrequency response and excellent dispersion. This isfurther aided from the flush mountings of this plate andthe bass/mid unit into the cabinet front baffle. Both driveunits are closely coupled to provide good integration. The TechnologyL Series
