Commonwealth of MassachusettsInstallation Requirements MACODE-3In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, theinstallation must be performed by a licensedplumber or gas fitter.1. For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipmentinstalled in every dwelling, building or structure used inwhole or in part for residential purposes, including thoseowned or operated by the commonwealth and where theside wall exhaust vent termination is less than seven (7)feet above finished grade, in the area of the venting,including but not limited to decks and porches, the followingrequirements shall be satisfied:d. INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS.At the time of installation of the side wall horizontalvented gas fueled equipment, the installing plumber orgasfitter shall observe that a hard wired carbon monoxidedetector with an alarm and battery back-up is installedon the floor level where the gas equipment is to beinstalled. In addition, the installing plumber or gasfittershall observe that a battery operated or hard wiredcarbon monoxide detector with an alarm is installed oneach additional level of the dwelling, building or structureserved by the side wall horizontal vented gas fueledequipment. It shall be the responsibility of the propertyowner to secure the services of qualified licensedprofessionals for the installation of hard wired carbonmonoxide detectors.i. In the event that the side wall horizontally ventedgas fueled equipment is installed in a crawl spaceor an attic, the hard wired carbon monoxide detectorwith alarm and battery back-up may be installed onthe next adjacent fl oor level.ii. In the event that the requirements of this subdivisioncan not be met at the time of completion ofinstallation, the owner shall have a period of thirty(30) days to comply with the above requirements;provided, however, that during said thirty (30) dayperiod, a battery operated carbon monoxide detectorwith an alarm shall be installed.e. APPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS. Eachcarbon monoxide detector as required in accordancewith the above provisions shall comply with NFPA 720and be ANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certifi ed.f. SIGNAGE. A metal or plastic identification plate shallbe permanently mounted to the exterior of the buildingat a minimum height of eight (8) feet above gradedirectly in line with the exhaust vent terminal for thehorizontally vented gas fueled heating appliance orequipment. The sign shall read, in print size no lessthan one-half (1/2) inch in size, “GAS VENT DIRECTLYBELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALL OBSTRUCTIONS”.g. INSPECTION. The state or local gas inspector of theside wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment shallnot approve the installation unless, upon inspection, theinspector observes carbon monoxide detectors andsignage installed in accordance with the provisions of248 CMR 5.08(2)(a)1 through 4.Improper venting can result in excessive levels ofcarbon monoxide which can cause severepersonal injury or death!2. Exemptions — The following equipment is exempt from248 CMR 5.08(2)(a) 1 through 4:a. The equipment listed in Chapter 10 entitled “EquipmentNot Required To Be Vented” in the most current editionof NFPA 54 as adopted by the Board; andb. Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gasfueled equipment installed in a room or structureseparate from the dwelling, building or structure usedin whole or in part for residential purposes.3. MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS - GAS EQUIPMENTVENTING SYSTEM PROVIDED.a. When the manufacturer of Product Approved side wallhorizontally vented gas equipment provides a ventingsystem design or venting system components with theequipment, the instructions provided by the manufac-turer for installation of the equipment and the ventingsystem shall include:i. Detailed instructions for the installation of the ventingsystem design or the venting system components;andii. A complete parts list for the venting system designor venting system.4. MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS – GAS EQUIPMENTVENTING SYSTEM NOT PROVIDED.a. When the manufacturer of a Product Approved side wallhorizontally vented gas fueled equipment does notprovide the par ts for venting the flue gases, butidentifies “special venting systems”, the followingrequirements shall be satisfied by the manufacturer:i. The referenced “special venting system” instructionsshall be included with the appliance or equipmentinstallation instructions; andii. The “special venting systems” shall be ProductApproved by the Board, and the instructions for thatsystem shall include a par ts list and detailedinstallation instructions.5. A copy of all installation instructions for all ProductApproved side wall horizontally vented gas fueledequipment, all venting instructions, all parts lists forventing instructions, and/or all venting design instructionsshall remain with the appliance or equipment at thecompletion of the installation.Improper venting can result in excessive levelsof carbon monoxide which can cause severepersonal injury or death!
