Fi d b b il & h B il M lFinned copper tube gas boilers & water heaters – Boiler Manual8FFOUTDOOR VENTINGWhen installed outdoors the Spectrum must be fitted with thefactory supplied outdoor hood assembly, see Figure 3. Multipleunits must be spaced per Figure 3A.The boiler/water heater must be at least 10 ft, 3.1 m from anydoor, window or gravity air inlet into any building and at least3 ft, 0.9 m from any overhang unless local codes dictate diff erently.Avoid locations where wind deflection off of adjacent walls, buildingsor shrubbery might cause a down draft. The unit(s) should be locatedat least 3 ft, 0.9 m from structures. Outdoor installations are notrecommended in areas where the danger of snow blockage exists.Do not place the boiler/water heater in a location thatwould subject it to runoff from adjacent buildings ordamage may occur voiding the warranty!Figure 3 Outdoor VentingFigure 3A Multiple Outdoor UnitsGENERAL PIPING REQUIREMENTSImproper piping of this boiler/water heater will void themanufacturer’s warranty and can cause boiler failureresulting in flooding and extensive property damage!Excessive water hardness causing lime build-up inthe copper heat exchanger tubes is NOT covered underthe manufacturer’s warranty. Excessive pitting anderosion of the internal surface of the copper heatexchanger tubes is NOT covered under themanufacturer’s warranty if the result of high waterflow rates, see Table 7 or 8. Return water temperaturesbelow 110°F, 43°C will result in heat exchangerdamage from excessive condensation voiding themanufacturer’s warranty, see Primary/SecondaryPiping Figure 5.Shut off valves and unions should be installed at theinlet and outlet connections of the boiler water heaterto provide for isolation of the unit should servicingbe necessary.Freeze ProtectionThis boiler/water heater is CSA designed certified for outdoorinstallation. Outdoor installations in areas where the danger offreezing exists are not recommended unless proper freeze protectionis provided. If the unit is to be installed in such an area the followingprecautions MUST be observed:1. A continuous flow of water through the boiler/water heaterMUST be maintained! The pump responsible for fl ow throughthe boiler/water heater must run continuously!2. An ethylene glycol/water mixture suitable for the minimumtemperature that the unit will be exposed to must be used. Thepump must be capable of producing 15% more flow andovercoming a 20% increase in head loss. Domestic water systemsmust be isolated from the water heater by the use of aheat exchanger or other approved method.3. If the boiler/water heater must be shut off for any reason theelectric, gas and water supplies MUST be shut off and the unitand its pump completely drained.Improper outdoor installation of this boiler/water heatercan cause boiler failure voiding the manufacturer'swarranty!SPECTRUMHEADERHOODSUPPLY/RETURNHEADER HOODEXHAUSTHOODCOMBUSTIONAIR HOOD3'0.9 m4'1.2 mRIOM-53RIOM-54
