3RailKing NW-2 Operating ManualRAILKINGQUICK START - BASIC OPERATIONThe RailKing NW-2 contains state-of-the art electronics with several built-in automatic features for incredibly realistic operation. Despite theseadvanced features, the NW-2 is easy to operate with any compatiblestandard AC transformer (see the compatibility chart on page 35).All models are controlled by a ProtoSound® DCRU® electronic reverseunit. The reverse unit operates in the same manner that all reverse unitsfunction by using forward, neutral and reverse states that are entered eachtime the throttle is turned on and off or by using the transformer directionswitch (if so equipped). The reverse unit is designed toignore dirty track, dead spots onswitches or minor short circuitswithout disrupting the engineoperation, even at slow, prototypicalspeeds. Once the engine is placedon the track, the throttle on thetransformer can be advanced. Youwill see that only the engine’s lightscome on and that only two dings ofthe ProtoSound® bell occurfollowed by the diesel start-upsounds (on ProtoSound® equipped 3-rail models). The engine does not run. This is known as the RESET stateand is explained in more detailbeginning on Page 4. TheProtoSound® DCRU® will notpower the motors until the throttleis turned OFF and then ON again. At this point, the engine will nowfunction just like any otherelectronic or mechanical E-unit. On ProtoSound® equipped engines, thediesel engine sounds will change in volume as the engine begins to move. The horn can be activated by pressing the whistle button on the transformerjust as any horn would be activated. See the sections later in this guide, beginning on page 5, for more information on activating the horn and bellsounds.DCRU® Electronic Reverse UnitLockout SwitchFigure 1: ProtoSound® DCRU® Lockout SwitchRESETNeutralReverseNeutralForwardFigure 2: DCRU Cycle Phases
