Manual-1DA 216DISTRIBUTION AMPLIFIEROPERATORS MANUALDA 216 CONNECTIONWhen connecting the DA 216 to other components in yoursystem for the first time, leave the power supply for last. Thisgives you a chance to make mistakes and correct themwithout damage to your fragile speakers, ears and nerves.INPUTSThe two Inputs on the DA 216 are balanced. They mayalso be used in an unbalanced configuration. Use onlyshielded cable for Inputs. This wire should always be two-conductor plus shield, even for unbalanced operation.Balanced Inputs should be connected to both the “+” and “–”terminals. Tie the shield to chassis ground for normal use. Insome cases it may be appropriate to not connect the shield,QUICK STARTThis section is provided as a convenience for those in a rush. If you are experienced with this unit or other Raneproducts, these few words should help refresh your memory.Inputs may be microphone or line level. The choice between the two is made by setting the push-buttons on the rearof the unit near the INPUTS. Follow the silk-screening for proper wiring hookup.Once INPUTS and OUTPUTS are satisfactorily connected, adjust the Input gain using a combination of the frontpanel MASTER LEVELS and the rear panel GAIN switches. Set the level as high as possible without causing the A andB OVERLOAD indicators to illuminate steadily for high input levels. If 1 x 16 Mono operation is required, use only oneINPUT and activate the MONO switch so the MONO LED illuminates. You may also use both A and B INPUTS for astereo signal and the DA 216 will sum the signal before distribution. If 1 x 8 STEREO operation is chosen, selectSTEREO. This mode may also be used for two independent mono zones as a 1 x 8 mono distribution amplifier.Never connect anything except an approved Rane power supply to the thing that looks like a telephone jack on therear of the DA 216. This is an AC input and requires special attention if you do not have a power supply exactly like theone that was originally packed with your unit. See the full explanation of the power supply requirements elsewhere in thismanual.however when using Phantom Power, this ground connectionis required. For unbalanced wiring use 2 conductor shieldedcable connecting the hot side of the input cable to “+” and thecold side to the “–”terminal. The shield must connect to theground terminal. For best noise rejection, run fully balancedwiring and connect the shield at both ends to help insureproper grounding. If a microphone is being connected to theunit, the shield may be connected to the case of the mic aswell as to the ground terminal on the unit.OUTPUTSThe DA 216’s OUTPUTS are balanced. The same wiringconventions as the Inputs apply. For unbalanced OUTPUTconnections, do not tie the unused terminal [i.e. “–”] to GND.
