The electrical installation should be inaccordance with BS 7671. Otherwise, all installationsmust be in accordance with the relevant instructionsin this booklet, with the relevant national and localregulations, and with the local gas and electricity supplycompany requirements.Make sure that the gas supply is turned on and that the hob iswired in and switched on (the hob needs an electricity supplyfor ignition).It is recommended that this appliance is serviced annually.Only a qualified service engineer should service the hob andonly approved spare parts should be used.Always allow the hob to cool and then switch it off at themains before cleaning or carrying out any maintenance work,unless specified otherwise in this guide.Peculiar SmellsMake sure the room is well ventilated to the outside air (see‘Ventilation’ below). Make that the kitchen is well ventilated; keepnatural ventilation holes open or install a powered cookerhood that vents outside. If you have several burners on oruse the hob for a long time, open a window or turn on anextractor fan.Personal Safety Accessible parts will become hot during use and willretain heat even after you have stopped cooking.Keep babies and children away from the hob andnever wear loose-fitting or hanging clothes whilethe appliance is in use. When the hob is not in use make sure that thecontrol knobs are in the OFF position. DO NOT use hotplate protectors, foil or hotplatecovers of any description. These may affect the safeuse of your hotplate burners and are potentiallyhazardous to health. Always keep combustible materials, e.g. curtains,and flammable liquids a safe distance away fromyour hob. Do not spray aerosols in the vicinity of the hob whileit is on. Use dry oven gloves when applicable – using dampgloves might result in steam burns when you toucha hot surface. Do not use a towel or other bulky clothin place of a glove – it might catch fire if brought intocontact with a hot surface. Never operate the hob with wet hands. Never heat unopened food containers. Pressurebuild up may make the containers burst and causeinjury. Do not use unstable saucepans. Always ensure thatyou position the handles away from the edge of thehotplate. Take care NOT to place metallic objects such asknives, forks, spoons and lids on the hob surfacesince they can get hot. The appliance is not intended to be operated bymeans of external timer or separated remote-controlsystem.Never leave the hotplate unattended at high heat settings.Pans boiling over can cause smoking, and greasy spills maycatch on fire. Use a deep fat thermometer whenever possibleto prevent fat overheating beyond the smoking point. Never leave a chip pan unattended. Always heat fatslowly, and watch as it heats. Deep fry pans shouldbe only one third full of fat. Filling the pan too fullof fat can cause spill over when food is added. If youuse a combination of oils or fats in frying, stir themtogether before heating, or as the fats melt.Foods for frying should be as dry as possible. Frost on frozenfoods or moisture on fresh foods can cause hot fat to bubbleup and over the sides of the pan. Carefully watch for spills oroverheating of foods when frying at high or medium hightemperatures. Never try to move a pan of hot fat, especially adeep fat fryer. Wait until the fat is cool.1.
